About Joan Baez

11/24/13: Musician and legendary social activist Joan Baez was honored in October as a prominent anti-war group celebrated its 90th anniversary.

In being given a Peace Award, Baez was described as "The exquisite songbird with a crystalline voice" who "refused to settle for mere stardom, who chose instead to become uniquely a generation's singing dove."

The award comes on the heels of Baez's tour of Australia over the summer – her first visit Down Under in 25 years. The trek included dates at the Adelaide Festival Theater, Melbourne Hammer Hall, Brisbane Concert Hall, Perth Concert Hall and the famed Sydney Opera House.

Baez hasn't done much touring lately in the United States, but on Saturday, July 27 she did perform with the legendary Emmylou Harris and Jackson Browne in a special concert at the San Jose Civic Auditorium in San Jose, California to benefit Downtown Street Teams. The organization strives to end homelessness through a "work-first" program.

Baez will play One Eyed Jacks in New Orleans the Sunday before Thanksgiving, November 24. A few weeks later, Showtime cable network will broadcast a concert to benefit the National Recording Preservation Foundation.

On September 29, Baez participated in "Another Day, Another Time: Celebrating the Music of Inside Llewyn Davis," the upcoming movie to be released in December. The concert was held at The Town Hall in New York City. Other artists participating in the concert that will air on Showtime include The Avett Brothers, Colin Meloy, Elvis Costello, Marcus Mumford, The Punch Brothers, Jack White and many more.

New York City folk artist Joan Baez began playing and performing music at an early age. Her career officially began in 1960, when she signed to Vanguard Records and released her self-titled debut. This, along with her following two albums, Joan Baez, Vol. 2 and Joan Baez in Concer, went on to be certified gold by the RIAA. During this time, Baez began cultivating her reputation as a folk revivalist, and attracted considerable attention. In 1971, Baez parted ways with Vanguard Records and signed to A&M; Records. Her renown continued to escalate as she became more and more a figure concerned with human rights and pacifism. One of her most significant releases during the period was Where Are You Now, My Son?, an anti-Vietnam War album well-received by pacifist activists. Also of note - as time went on, she became actively involved with folk legend Bob Dylan, both musically and at one point, romantically. In 1976, she parted ways with A&M; Records and would go on to jump around from label to label for the rest of her career (she has released albums on CBS, Virgin Records and Guardian Records, among others). As of 2008, Baez has released 34 full-length albums, six of which have been certified gold by the RIAA.
