Michigan Wolverines Basketball Details

Coach John Beilein’s Michigan Wolverines had a wild 2016-17 season. For much of the year, the Wolverines were on the NCAA Tournament bubble, right up until the team made a phenomenal run through the Big Ten Conference Tournament, winning the title and gaining an automatic bid to the tournament. But the season was not without its scares, as merely days before the Big Ten tourney began, the Wolverine basketball team on a plane that skidded on an icy runway and put the entire team in danger. Coach Beilein gave his players the option to skip the tournament and be with their loved ones, but Michigan wanted to play. And not only did the team play, but it won the whole thing. In the NCAA tournament, the Wolverines continued to play well, knocking off #2 Louisville in the second round and coming up a point short against the #3 Oregon Ducks. Michigan finished the year 26-12 (10-8 in conference).

After a solid finish to 16-17, Michigan fans are hopeful for an even better 2017-18 campaign. It won’t be easy, however, as star guard Derrick Walton Jr. graduated after a senior season where he averaged 15.5 points and 4.9 assists per game. D.J. Wilson also left for the NBA after a junior season where he averaged 11 points and 5.3 rebounds. Returning to Michigan is guard Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman, who will start after a junior season where he averaged 9.1 points per game. Guards Xavier Simpson and Charles Matthews will see bigger minutes, likely in starting roles, and forward Moe Wagner (12.1 points, 4.5 rebounds) will be vital in the frontcourt. It should be an exciting season for the Michigan faithful, who will surely pack Ann Arbor’s Crisler Center night in and night out.
