Minnesota Golden Gophers Football Details

The Twin Cities can be frigid during the winter, but they’re gorgeous in the fall. If you like the combo of a large college campus mixed with a big city, dress in maroon and gold and check out a football game this season at the University of Minnesota.

The Golden Gophers’ football program has been in existence since 1882, and became an inaugural member of the Big Ten Conference in 1896. The school has won seven national championships, in 1904, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1940, 1941 and 1960.

Minnesota boasts 22 members of the College Football Hall of Fame, seven Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees and one Heisman Trophy winner (Bruce Smith, 1941).

Since 2009, the Gophers have played home games at TCF Bank Stadium, a horseshoe-shaped facility that seats more than 52,000. Before games, make sure to watch the players and coaches make the “Victory Walk” from the alumni center to the stadium.

If you hear an unfamiliar chant during the game, it’s probably “Ski-U-Mah” (pronounced SKY-YOU-MAH). The Ski part is a Sioux battle cry for victory, while the rest represents the school. Another popular chant is “Spin Your Head!”, which encourages mascot Goldie Gopher to … spin his head.

Every other year, the historic Minnesota-Wisconsin game closes out the Golden Gophers’ home schedule. The Golden Gophers and Badgers lay claim to the nation’s most-played rivalry, and have battled in each season since 1907. The winner of the annual game receives Paul Bunyan’s Axe as a reward for its triumph.

The Golden Gophers offer rich history and a pretty campus setting. Get your Minnesota football tickets now!
