The Golden Gophers’ football program has been in existence since 1882, and became an inaugural member of the Big Ten Conference in 1896. The school has won seven national championships, in 1904, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1940, 1941 and 1960. Another popular chant is “Spin Your Head!”, which encourages mascot Goldie Gopher to … spin his head. Every other year, the historic Minnesota-Wisconsin game closes out the Golden Gophers’ home schedule. The Golden Gophers and Badgers lay claim to the nation’s most-played rivalry, and have battled in each season since 1907.
