The Paper Kites are an Australian indie folk/rock band formed in 2009 in Melbourne. The core members—Sam Bentley, Christina Lacy, Dave Powys, Josh Bentley, and Sam Rasmussen—began as high school friends who shared a passion for music. Initially starting as a duo, Bentley and Lacy expanded their lineup in 2010, recording and releasing homemade EPs that they sold at local shows. Their breakout moment came in 2010 with the release of their single “Bloom,” which garnered significant attention and helped establish their presence in the indie music scene.
Over the years, The Paper Kites have evolved their sound, moving from acoustic folk roots to a more expansive indie rock style. Their 2015 album twelvefour, a concept album written between midnight and 4 a.m., received critical acclaim and marked a significant shift in their musical direction. Subsequent albums like On the Train Ride Home (2018) and On the Corner Where You Live (2018) continued to showcase their growth, blending atmospheric soundscapes with introspective lyrics. In 2021, they released Roses, a collaborative album featuring various artists, which further expanded their musical horizons.
In 2023, The Paper Kites released their sixth studio album, At the Roadhouse, recorded in an old store in Campbells Creek, Australia.
