The Buffalo Bills have a long and storied history, but when it comes to playoff football are best known for nearly two decades of dominance in the 1980s and 1990s. Fans will also never forget the historic “Comeback” of 1993.

The Bills joined the NFL with the AFL-NFL Merger in 1970 with two championships already to their name. However, the early NFL days of the Bills were not so bright. Their sole playoff appearance in their first NFL decade was a 32-14 loss to the Terry Bradshaw-era Pittsburgh Steelers. One of the Bills few bright spots was a touchdown reception by Running Back OJ Simpson to cushion the blow. The 70s also stoked the rivalry between the Bills and the Miami Dolphins, who dominated the Bills for a decade.

Tides turned in the 80s for the Bills. A battle to the 1980 AFC Championship round and 1981 Wild Card appearance foreshadowed the Jim Kelly Bills. Kelly, a prototypical franchise quarterback who joined the Bills in 1986, shepherded the Bills’ peak seasons.

Kelly led the Bills to the 1988-89 AFC Championship against the Cincinnati Bengals, and suffered a 21-10 loss featuring three interceptions. In 1990, the Bills suffered a tight loss to the Cleveland Browns, 34-30.

The 1991-1995 seasons mark a bittersweet era for the Bills. The franchise, hitting a stride, beat their rival Dolphins 44-34 in the AFC Divisional Round and routed the Los Angeles Raiders 51-3 to secure their first post-merger Championship match. Super Bowl XXV was pure, classic football with zero turnovers and electric drama. The Bills lost in the final seconds off a wide-right field goal, leaving a bitter 20-19 taste in the mouth.

The Bills would go on to win the AFC Championship the following three years. The Washington Redskins stifled the Bills 14-2 season in Super Bowl XXVI with a hard-nosed defensive attack. The Bills would go on to lose the following Super Bowl as well, 52-17 to the Dallas Cowboys.

Enter “the Comeback.” Coming off three straight AFC Championship wins, and as many Super Bowl losses, the Buffalo Bills found themselves with their backs on the ropes to the Houston Oilers in the 1993 AFC Wild Card. Down three starters (including Kelly) and 32 points in the third quarter, back-up Quarterback Frank Reich threw four touchdowns and handed off one rushing TD for to tie the game in the waning seconds. The Bills, with a 32-yard field goal, won the Wild Card in overtime, only to lose, for the fourth year in a row, in the Super Bowl.

The new-look Oilers, now the Tennessee Titans, flipped the script in 1999 with the “Music City Miracle,” an unprecedented comeback of their own. It would mark the beginning of a Bills playoff drought until 2017.

The Bills’ postseason has been a pattern of “what-if’s” and “almosts.” But the franchise has firmly established itself as a contender, and it is only a matter of time until it breaks through.
