Bulls vs. Cavaliers Details
Chicago Bulls vs. Cleveland Cavaliers
Matchups between Bulls and Cavs have starred some of the best players in NBA history, and the dominant team in the rivalry has changed as those players have come and gone from both teams.
The Bulls struck gold when they drafted Michael Jordan with the third overall pick in the 1984 draft. Jordan led the Bulls to six NBA Championships, and the team never lost a single NBA Finals series. The Bulls’ journeys through the playoffs often came at the Cavs’ expense: the two teams played in five playoff series between 1988 to 1994, and Bulls won each time.
The Cavaliers’ fortunes improved dramatically after they drafted LeBron James with the first overall pick in the 2003 draft. Jordan had retired by the time James entered the league, and the addition of one of the best players of the 21st century has given the Cavs the edge in their rivalry with Chicago. The Cavs have played the Bulls twice in the playoffs in the LeBron James era and have won both series. The Bulls were one of the teams the Cavaliers beat on their way to their first title, which snapped the city of Cleveland’s 52 year pro-sports title drought.
Historic Bulls vs. Cavaliers Games
Michael Jordan: The Shot: The Cavs went into the first round of the 1989 playoffs as heavy favorites over the Bulls. The Bulls had lost all six of their games against the Cavaliers that season. With three seconds left on the clock and down a point in a winner-take-all Game 5 (the first round of the playoffs was a best-of-five series at the time), Jordan took an inbound pass and made a contested shot over the Cavs’ Craig Ehlo. Jordan’s legendary shot sent the two teams in opposite directions: the Bulls dynasty was just about to begin, and the Cavs would take their title drought into the new millennium.
Game 6, 2015 Eastern Conference Semifinals: In a new era of the rivalry, the Cavs got the upper hand on the Bulls. In the second round of the 2015 playoffs, LeBron James and the Cavaliers eliminated the Bulls in six and only allowed Chicago to score 73 points in the deciding game. The Cavaliers went onto the NBA Finals, where they were defeated by the Golden State Warriors. Cleveland would have to wait one more year to end its championship drought.
When do the Bulls and Cavaliers play each other?
The Bulls and Cavs are division rivals: both teams play in the Eastern Conference’s Central Division. Division rivals in the NBA play each other four times each season. The schedule splits home games evenly between the two teams, so the Cavs and Bulls will both play two home games against the other team each season.
