Dolly Parton's 'Smoke' signals new album
Dolly Parton has her fans seeing blue … smoke, that is.
In early 2014 Parton embarked on the Blue Smoke World Tour in support of her forth-second studio album, "Blue Smoke." The album's initial release came in Australia and New Zealand on January 31 to coincide with her tour dates there in February. The disc reached the top 10 in both countries, peaking at No. 7 in Australia and reaching the very top of the charts in New Zealand.
The North American release of "Blue Smoke" was held until May 13, 2013 behind a media blitz that saw Parton appear on QVC's "Q Sessions Live," on Yahoo! Music and on NBC's "Today" show on the album's release date as part of the show's Toyota Concert Series. The entire album also streamed for free on National Public Radio, and Parton promoted the album by offering fans a free digital copy if they pre-ordered the album from Walmart (where a deluxe edition with four bonus tracks was made available).
In the UK, a special version of the album, titled "Blue Smoke – The Best Of," was released on June 9, 2014 to coincide with the European leg of the Blue Smoke World Tour. It features the standard album, plus a bonus disc with 20 of Parton's greatest hits.
The iconic Parton has shows in July in England, Ireland, Scotland, Denmark, Germany and Norway. She recently made headlines after offering to adopt a dog that was left behind at Glastonbury. The dog was discovered in a tent during a clean-up after festival-goers left the site. The animal was named after Dolly and taken in by a shelter, but she offered to take it back to the U.S. if the owner couldn't be located.
Parton remains an icon of country music (Updated January 23, 2013)
Dolly Parton may have become a genuine superstar in the 1970's, but the last few decades (if not the last few years) have been particularly kind to the songstress, who has weathered the storm of contemporary country's new artist taking over the genre. She has remained an iconic figure in music, and even while acting as a critic of radio's treatment of older stars and watching sales decline, her efforts to remain relevant in the mainstream certainly did not go unnoticed.
Maybe it was Parton's published autobiography in 1994 that looped her name back into industry circles and the collective conscious of country music fans. Whatever the case, her 1996 album "Treasures" was praised by critics and prompted a hurried follow-up. She released "Hungry Again" in 1998 and "The Grass is Blue" the following year. The latter would be hailed as a rootsy effort that would spark recordings that would carry her into the next century. Behind "Little Sparrow," "Halos & Horns" and "For God and Country," Parton's music was alive and well in the new millennium.
A rush of new music continued from Dolly as time rolled on. "Those Were the Days" (2005) found Parton covering an eclectic mix of her favorite pop songs. Three years later came "Backwoods Barbie," her first true mainstream country album in nearly 20 years. Her latest, 2011's "Better Day," is also an album of all Parton-written material and the 41st studio release of an illustrious career.
Parton embarked on the Better Day World Tour on July 17, 2011 and wrapped on December 1. She blazed through the US, Europe and Australia, playing 49 shows at an overall gross of $34 million, making the tour her most successful yet.
A History of Dolly Parton tickets
Country singer legend Dolly Parton has racked up about every accolade possible for a singer: several Grammy Awards, Country Music Association Awards, her own TV show, movies, an Academy Award nomination. But it's music, always music, that is at the heart of her creative talent. 'I'll always keep making records,' she has said. Now, after five decades of performing and recording her heartfelt brand of country songs, Dolly Parton shows no signs of slowing down. With classic, often-covered hits like 'Jolene,' 'Here You Come Again' and 'I Will Always Love You,' it's no wonder fans continue to buy up Dolly Parton tickets in droves.
True Country Roots
Born in 1946, Dolly Rebecca Parton grew up on a run-down farm in Locust Ridge, Tenn., one of 12 kids. Before she was even a teenager, she appeared on TV in Knoxville, at age 12, and before long was invited for appearances on the Grand Ole Opry, the consummate country music show. There, she teamed up with country star Porter Wagoner for a series of famous duets that launched her career. While starring in her own TV show, Dolly, in the 1970s, then appearing in more than a dozen movies, including the hits Nine to Five (1980) and Steel Magnolias (1989), Dolly Parton never stopped writing, recording and performing music. Having produced more than 40 solo studio albums (and collaborating on many more), including her recent release Better Day, Dolly Parton is ranked #34 on the VH1 Greatest Women of Rock N Roll list.
