Atlanta Falcons vs. Carolina Panthers
While the Carolina Panthers have only been around since the 1995 NFL season, the rivalry between the Atlanta Falcons and Panthers has been captivating over the last two-plus decades. Both teams have enjoyed big time success in the NFC South, with the team that does better in this rivalry giving themselves the inside track to division titles and Super Bowl appearances. While they have yet to square off in the playoffs, these teams are no strangers to close, important games.
Key players in this rivalry feature star quarterbacks like Michael Vick, Cam Newton and Matt Ryan, while skill position players like Julio Jones and Jonathan Stewart have helped make both offenses electrifying when these squads get together. On the defensive side of the ball, standouts like Josh Norman of the Panthers and DeAngelo Hall for the Falcons have made their marks at different points of this rivalry's history.
Historic Falcons vs. Panthers Games
September of 1995 saw the Panthers and Falcons square off for the first time, during the Panthers' first season as an NFL team. In a close game, the Falcons took a 23-20 win at home in overtime, which was also the first overtime game in the history of the Carolina Panthers franchise. The Panthers would go onto win the rematch against the Falcons later that season, earning a split and making a statement in the process.
2002 marked the first time that Michael Vick took the field against the Panthers, as the quarterback elevated his game from his time in college at Virginia Tech to the pros. Atlanta had a brilliant performance from Vick and their defense, as they racked up 31 points in a shutout victory over Carolina. The Falcons enjoyed some success over the Panthers during the Vick era, as they enjoyed success against most of the teams they played due to his ability to render defenses ineffective.
There have only been two games between the Panthers and Falcons where the winner has clinched the NFC South then and there, with the Panthers winning both of those games. Carolina clinched the NFC South in the Georgia Dome in 2013 with a dramatic 21-20 victory, and did the same in 2014 with a 34-3 win.

When Do the Panthers Play the Falcons?
The Panthers and Falcons play two games against one another in the regular season every year, as a result of them both being members of the NFC South. There is also the opportunity for the Panthers and Falcons to play one additional game each year in the playoffs if both teams are able to qualify. This has not yet happened, but the mere possibility should be exciting to any football fan. Carolina plays its home games at Bank of America Stadium, while the Falcons play their home games at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
