After nearly four decades as a recording artist and soulful performer, one thing is certain about Gloria Gaynor: she will survive. It was back in 1979, in the heat of the disco era, when Gloria Gaynor scored her international monster smash hit, the Number One single 'I Will Survive,' an inspiring song about overcoming impossible odds and enduring life's challenges that every single person can relate to. That song has gone on to become her signature tune, and has been included in numerous Hollywood soundtracks and on television, and has even passed on to subsequent generations. Gloria Gaynor was born in 1949 in Newark, New Jersey, and joined a group called the Soul Satisfiers as a teenager. She enjoyed her first success in 1975 with the release of her debut album Never Can Say Goodbye, featuring a disco version of the Clifton Davis song first recorded by The Jackson 5. Her follow-up albums included many covers of jazz and crooner standards, such as 'How High the Moon,' 'I've Got You Under My Skin' and 'As Time Goes By,' typically set to full disco arrangements, complete with rolling rhythm and string backdrops. And though she was enjoying consistent success, it was her 1979 album Love Tracks that catapulted her commercial popularity to astronomic heights, not only with 'I Will Survive,' but also a rendition of 'Goin' Out of My Head,' and a tune titled 'Substitute.' Gaynor has seen a revival of her career in the new millennium, and fans flock to her shows to hear her deep, full vocal deliveries of disco favorites.
