Harry Potter and The Cursed Child in New York Details
What happens when Harry Potter grows up and has three school-aged children of his own? You get a spectacular musical with plenty of theatrical wizardry that is too grand to tell in just one part — but takes two! This Tony-award winning play premiered at the Palace Theater in London and is making a splash with Broadway audiences since its opening in April 2018 at the Lyric Theatre in New York.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the first Harry Potter tale to be told on stage by the original bestselling author JK Rowling along with British theater director John Tiffany and British screenwriter and playwright Jack Thorne. The play picks up nineteen years after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows leaves off and tells the story of a now adult Harry Potter as a father, husband and an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic. It’s a story about the relationship between father and son, friendship, family, and the fusion of past and present that can reveal darkness in the most unexpected places.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child first previewed on Broadway on March 16, 2018 and later premiered on April 22, 2018. The original cast of the London West End production where the play first premiered opened the Broadway shows, and included actors Anthony Boyle, Sam Clemmett, Noma Durnezweni, Poppy Miller, Jamie Parker, Alex Price, and Paul Thornley.
The Lyric Theater is located at 214 West 43rd Street in New York City in the legendary Broadway district, and seats 1,622 theater patrons. The history of the Lyric Theater dates back to 1903 when it was known simply as ‘Lyric’ and hosted musical revue shows and Shakespeare productions. Through the years, the theater became a movie theater, then again a musical theater, and finally a nightclub. By the 1990s the building was neglected and finally condemned when the city took it over and put it under protection of the New 43rd Street organization. A new theater was built, but soon went bankrupt and later completely renovated and renamed. Ironically enough ‘the curse’ continued when after Young Frankenstein closed in 2009, the theater remained vacant until Spiderman: Turn off the Dark, which was riddled with pre-debut problems, finally opened in July 2011 after seven months of previews. A UK-based theater group took over the lease and completely renovated and modified the theater for its production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child spending over $70 million for both the renovations and the production.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has won numerous awards both for its original London production and for its Broadway showing. In total, Harry Potter won a record-smashing nine Laurence Olivier awards including Best New Play. On Broadway, Harry Potter won six Tony awards including Best Play. The play continues to take in record sales at the box office including a record week during the last week of December 2018 where it sold more tickets than any other play on Broadway totaling over $2.5 million.
On average, a ticket to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in New York City will likely run fans a bit more than $300. That said, this figure is an average, and the actual price may vary depending on where you are sitting.. The play is shown in two parts on the same day at two different times. The ticket price is for both parts.
