About Lana Del Rey
Lana Del Rey looks to 2015 tour
Lana Del Rey has been a very busy woman in 2014. In fact, her calendar has been jam packed since it was announced back in January that she would be covering the song "Once Upon a Dream" for the feature film "Maleficent." The following month, she posted a picture of herself and Dan Auerbach on Twitter with the caption, "Me and Dan Auerbach are excited to present you with "Ultraviolence." That turned out to be the title to hear brand new album.
Del Rey and Auerbach had actually been rumored to be working together at Auerbach's Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville, and he was said to be producing the album. Then in March, Rufus Wainwright revealed that he was also working with Del Rey. And a month after that came the release of the first single from the album, "West Coast." It was followed by the release of "Shades of Cool" in May, and two more cuts (including the title track) were also released before the album dropped on June 13.
"Ultraviolence" debuted at number one in twelve countries, including the United States and United Kingdom. The album sold more than 880,000 copies in its first week, worldwide, and in short order Rolling Stone revealed that Del Rey would also be a guest on Brian Wilson's studio album "No Pier Pressure."
It was also just announced that two brand new songs by Del Rey, "Big Eyes" and "I Can Fly", will be featured in Tim Burton's 2014 biographical film "Big Eyes," which focuses on the American artist Margaret Keane. Finally, on December 1st, Del Rey announced she will be headlining a tour in summer 2015, with at least eight of the shows set to feature Courtney Love.
A Year to Remember for Lana Del Ray (Updated 1/23/14)
Perhaps Lana Del Rey hasn't put music on the back burner after all. And why should she now? As it turns out, 2013 was a banner year for the young starlet, whose third EP, "Paradise," spawned her second top tem album in the U.S., debuting at number 10 on the Billboard 200 with some 67,000 copies sold in its first week alone.
Not bad for a girl who was ultimately looking to focus more on a film career. Sure, her music has praised for its cinematic sound and references to pop culture. Yes, she draws influence from the likes of Elvis Presley, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Nirvna, Bruce Springsteen and so many more. She's clearly reaped the benefits of doing her own thing. That's why she won the Q Award for "Best New Thing," a BRIT Award for "International Breakthrough Act" and yet another for "International Pop Female Solo Artist."
Did we mention that 2013 was also Lana's year to score her first Grammy nominations? They came in the categories for Best Pop Vocal Album for "Paradise" and Best Song Written for Visual Media for "Young and Beautiful."
Though Del Rey was "snubbed" by the Motion Picture Academy for a potential Oscar nomination for "Young and Beautiful" (which appeared on the soundtrack to "The Great Gatsby"), she has other events already penciled into her calendar for 2014. In fact, the neo-torch singer will perform at this year's Coachella Festival, it was recently announced. She is part of a huge list of performers for the three-day, two-weekend festival to be held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California on April 11, 12 and 13. The entire festival repeats the following weekend, April 18-20.
Her music wasn't 'Born to Die' (Created March 20, 2014)
Lana Del Ray has lived well beyond her years, coincidentally packing her heart and soul into an album she would call "Born to Die." That release came in January 2012, but the story of Lana and the puzzle pieces of her life fit together in a much more complicated way.
Now a singer, songwriter and Vogue cover girl, the childhood of Lana (born Elizabeth Woolridge Grant) is in stark contrast to the fame she now enjoys. By age 14 she was dealing with an alcohol dependency, had been sent away to boarding school and ultimately attended Fordham University in New York City to study metaphysics. Picking up her first guitar ultimately changed the course her life would take from there on out.
Grant began performing in clubs around New York City under various names, including her birth name, as well as Sparkle Rope Jump Queen and Lizzy Grant and the Phenomena. At age 20, she signed a record contract for $10,000 and moved into a trailer park. When the album was shelved, she began working in homeless outreach, drug and alcohol rehabilitation.
It wasn't until fall 2011 that Grant rebranded herself as Lana Del Ray and signed a joint record deal with both Interscope Records and Polydor. It came after another false start (with 5 Point Records) and a full-length album that was quickly yanked from circulation. But the third time would prove to be the charm, as Lana put a few tracks on her YouTube channel. Her debut single, "Video Games," accumulated in excess of 20 million views in its first 5 months of upload, and by the time "Born to Die" was officially released in January 2012, Lana had her vision re-directed yet again.
Now partnered with NEXT Model Management agency and with dreams of pursuing a film career, Lana has made music just a small focus of her overall appeal. Her third EP, "Paradise," is currently being supported by a tour that will take her through France, Denmark, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Austria and many other countries in 2013.
