LCD Soundsystem from start to finish (Updated December 12, 2012)
A debut album called "Losing My Edge," sounds a bit like an oxymoron for any band looking for early momentum and career longevity. Instead, the freshman release from LCD Soundsystem became one of the most talked about indie projects of 2002. The popular dance-punk band, fronted by singer-songwriter James Murphy, eventually released three critically acclaimed albums before it disbanded.
Widespread recognition was never expected for the band – at least until music fans heard the title track to that first album. Instead, the eight-minute song became an underground dance favorite, and was followed up by the equally received "Give It Up" and "Yeah." Grammy nominations followed, including one in the Dance category for "Daft Punk is Playing at My House."
Next came the 'stunt' track entitled "45:33" as part of a promotion with Nike. The track was actually a mind-blowing 45 minutes and 58 seconds long, and was said to be Murphy's long-wanted opportunity to create a longer piece of music. It was an interesting segue into the band's next album, "Sound of Silver," which included the heavily praised, "All My Friends," named by Time magazine as one of the 10 Best Songs of 2007.
The band's third and final album, "This is Happening" bowed in the spring of 2010 to universal acclaim, and was said to be the 'end of an era.' On February 5, 2011, a statement was posted on the band's website that announced it was officially disbanding. Their farewell concert took place on April 2, 2011 at Madison Square Garden in New York City and was chronicled in the documentary film, "Shut Up and Play the Hits."
In December 2012, a collaboration between Murphy and Canadian band Arcade Fire was officially announced. Though it had reportedly been several years in the making, the band's manager made it official when he told Spin magazine 'three or so songs' were being worked on.
