Michael Brun releases "Zenith"
Michael Brun is one of those artists who is always thankful for the here and now. He looks back at his good fortune – growing up in a safe environment, attending good schools and having a tight-knit family – and realizes there are many people who didn't have those same opportunities to get ahead in life.
That sentiment is part of what sparked the launch of Brun's new label, Kid Coconut, in 2014. It not only works as a vehicle to showcase Brun's musical endeavors, such as his debut release, "Zenith," on July 21, but also seeks to showcase and develop Haitian artists who would otherwise lack any sort of access to that kind of exposure.
"The success I've had is a mix of hard work and also the right things happening for me," Brun told Billboard magazine. "You can't just keep that help, you have to reciprocate it. That's exactly what I want to do for Haitian artists, because a lot of them don't have a chance to meet artists from outside the country. Their work can be great, but it comes a point where you just hit a wall and you can't continue developing unless you get some outside help."
Brun had the chance to play at Coachella's Sahara tent and the Ultra Music Festival main stage in 2014, and also headlined gigs at top Miami and New York clubs like Pacha, Marquee, Wall and Liv. And he continues to work with and remix many of dance music's biggest names.
About Michael Brun
There's a lot you probably don't know about your favorite EM artists of the world, but Michael Brun may have the most fascinating background out of all of them.
Brun not only spent his childhood in Haiti (born to a Haitian father and Guyanese mother), his musical background ranges from percussion-heavy and Afro-groove music to disco and synth pop. He also played guitar and piano from a young age, but picked up EDM production as a teen. Fast forward to age 19, and Brun had the backing of some industry heavyweights like Hardwell and Kaskade.
He's never been one to name drop, but Brun certainly wouldn't have had an issue (thanks to his new friends) with becoming one of the biggest names on the EDM scene. Instead, he headed off to Davidson College and, in his 'spare' time, opened for the likes of Avicii, Max Vangeli and Nadia Ali. He also had success with the release of his December 2011 single "Dawn" on Hardwell's Revealed Recordings, which peaked at No. 3 on Beatport's Progressive Releases.
The now 21-year-old recently revealed he moved to the United States in hopes of becoming a doctor. He attended Indiana's Culver Military Academy, became more involved in music when he went to college, then took a leave of absence from Davidson in order to make his musical dreams a reality. Since then, he's not only garnered a ton of interest from around the globe, he's played at some of its biggest festivals, including the recent Coachella Music Festival.
