Lauryn Hill is a singer and rapper best known for her critically acclaimed solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Hill has been setting records in the industry since day one, lending her unique and powerful storytelling voice to heavy topics that affect people across the world. Her solo album earned 10 Grammy nominations, winning a total of 5 Grammys in 1999. At the time, Lauryn Hill broke the record of nominations and awards earned by a female for a single album. Her Grammys won that night included Album of the Year, Best R&B Album, Best R&B Song, Best Female R&B Performance, and Best New Artist.
The success of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill propelled her to superstardom and made her an international sensation. She used her success to bring hip-hop and neo-soul to prominence. Her solo album is regarded as one of the greatest albums of the 1990s, and of all time. Selling 19 million copies worldwide by 2013, it earned the honor of being preserved by the Library of Congress in the National Recording Registry. This honor is given to art that holds cultural and historical significance.
Lauryn Hill has also received recognition from international entities, such as being designated as one of the 100 Greatest Albums of Our Lifetime (1993-2006) in the United Kingdom. In several countries her album was listed as one of the 50 Best Albums of the 1990s. Lauryn Hill has also done quite a bit of voice-over work on shows like King of the Hill, and the 2014 film, Concerning Violence. In 1993, Lauryn Hill played the vocal powerhouse Rita Louise Watson on Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit alongside Whoopie Goldberg.
In 2015, Lauryn Hill made a significant comeback after being out of the spotlight, lending her voice to the soundtrack for What Happened, Miss Simone? Originally slated to record just two songs for the soundtrack, Hill recorded six songs. Her contribution was hailed as a “gift” by NPR, earning Hill critical acclaim. Since then, she has appeared in several festivals and toured with Nas in 2017. 2018 marked the 20th Anniversary of her solo album, which is still one of the most popular albums in the genre despite the passage of time.
