About Womens March Madness

The NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament began in 1982, providing a national stage for the top women’s college basketball teams to compete for a championship. Modeled after the men’s tournament, the women’s tournament initially featured 32 teams, later expanding to 64 in 1994 and eventually 68 in 2022 to include a “First Four” play-in round. Held each March, the women’s tournament has rapidly grown in popularity, showcasing rising talents, powerhouse programs, and thrilling games. Over the years, this tournament has provided a platform for female athletes to shine on a national level, helping to elevate women’s basketball in the collegiate and professional arenas.

Throughout its history, the NCAA Women’s Tournament has seen numerous iconic moments and legendary performances. One of the most memorable came in 1993, when Texas Tech, led by Sheryl Swoopes, won the championship. Swoopes scored a record 47 points in the title game, capturing national attention and establishing herself as one of the game’s all-time greats. Another historic moment came in 1995 when the University of Connecticut completed an undefeated season and won its first national title under Coach Geno Auriemma. This championship marked the beginning of UConn’s dominance in women’s basketball, as the Huskies went on to build a dynasty, winning numerous championships in the decades that followed.

The NCAA Women’s Tournament has also featured many unforgettable Cinderella stories and fierce rivalries. In 1998, 16-seed Harvard shocked the basketball world by defeating top-seed Stanford, marking the first time in the history of the women’s or men’s tournaments that a 16-seed had defeated a 1-seed. More recently, in 2021, Arizona made a surprising run to the championship game, narrowly losing to Stanford in a thrilling final.

And of course, we can't talk about Womens March Madness without talking about the 2023-2024 season featuring record-breakers Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. Clark became the all-time NCAA scoring leader (both men's and women's), breaking the late Pete Maravich’s 54-year-old record. She also crushed personal records like career points (3,951), points in a season (1,234), career points per game (28.42), 3-pointers in a season (201) and career 3-pointers (548). Meanwhile, Reese averaged a double-double per game during her senior year (18.6 points and 13.4 rebounds, leading the SEC), scored in double figures in all 67 of her games at LSU and ranked No. 2 in the nation for rebounds. Both Clark and Reese have continued their record-breaking performances in the WNBA with both ladies making the 2024 WNBA All-Star Team, Clark claiming "Rookie of the Year" and leading the league in assists, and Reese breaking the record for most rebounds by any player in a single year (all in their rookie seasons, mind you).

Players like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Diana Taurasi, Maya Moore, Breanna Stewart, and Sabrina Ionescu have delivered career-defining performances on this stage, inspiring future generations of athletes. Each year, the women’s tournament captures the intensity and drama of March Madness, celebrating the skill, athleticism, and passion that define women’s college basketball.
