New England Revolution Playoff History
The New England Revolution have one of the most exciting and painful MLS playoff records. New England fans have felt heartbreak unlike any other MLS team, having lost four MLS Cup Finals in the span of six years. Some of New England’s losses will be etched into their fan’s memories for the duration of their beloved team.
New England are a founding MLS team and began with the league in 1996. The first several seasons were a struggle for the Revs. In their first six seasons, New England made the playoffs only twice and lost both times in the quarterfinals. But, New England found their playoff groove in 2002 and became regular championship contenders.
Former Liverpool player Steve Nicols became the Revolution’s coach in 2002 and guided New England to its first MLS Cup Final. For the first time, the team finished first in the Eastern Conference, and they took this form into the playoffs. A sign of things to come, Revs fans were left in shock when a golden goal from Galaxy player Carlos Ruiz ended their championship hopes.
During Nicols’ time as Revolution manager, New England qualified for eight playoffs in a row. It was the club’s most successful period, but unfortunate results continued in key games. From 2005-2007, the Revolution made the MLS Cup Finals three times in a row. During this time period, American forward Taylor Twellman starred for the Revolution and led them to many a victory. Twellman ended his Revolution career with 101 MLS goals.
The 2005 MLS Cup Final ended much like the 2002 final match. The Revs once again faced the LA Galaxy, and exactly like the first match, regulation ended with a level score at 0-0. In overtime, one goal made the difference as Guillermo RamĂrez found the back of the net in the 113th minute. The similarities between the 2002 and 2005 almost live up to the similarity between the Revolution’s next two MLS Cup Final appearances.
In the 2006 Final, the Revs at least had a new opponent to face, the Houston Dynamo. After 90 minutes of football, Revolution fans were tortured with extra time in another MLS Cup Final. But this time, New England fans received a glimmer of hope. Talisman Taylor Twellman slotted home a goal in the 113th minute, and it seemed the franchise’s long suffering was nearing an end. However, Brian Ching had a different idea when he headed home an equalizer just one minute later. Ultimately, the Dynamo won a penalty shootout, bringing the Revolution back down to earth.
The Revolution lost their third MLS Cup Final in a row in 2007, when the Dynamo repeated as champions by beating the Revs by one late goal. New England returned to the Final in 2014 and lost to their bogeyman team, the Los Angeles Galaxy. For a third time in an MLS Cup Final, the Revs lost in extra time to the Galaxy.

What makes New England Revolution postseason games special for fans?
Buying New England Revolution postseason tickets isn’t just about attending another game—it’s about experiencing something bigger. Here’s what makes postseason special compared to the regular season, and why it’s worth securing tickets early:
Higher stakes and intensity: Postseason New England Revolution games are when every action counts. The pressure is on, the matchups more meaningful, and the atmosphere electric. If you want to see critical plays, clutch moments, and possibly history being made, this is where it happens.
Scarcity and urgency: There are fewer postseason games, and demand shoots up fast. Premium seats fill up quickly. Buying tickets early means better choice in seating, avoiding inflated resale prices, and locking in your spot before the buzz drives them higher.
Exclusive perks and priority: Ticket holders often get extras that regular-season attendees don’t always get: priority access to purchase playoff tickets (especially if you’re a season-ticket or membership holder), exclusive merchandise, special events, themed game nights, or upgraded amenities (parking, entrance, etc.).
Memorable atmosphere and fan energy: The crowd is more invested, the media presence greater, and the tension more palpable. Postseason New England Revolution games tend to be more electric—fans are louder, anticipation is higher, and the emotional payoff is bigger.
Opportunity to witness defining moments: These are the New England Revolution fans talk about for years. Comebacks, championships, career highlights—postseason is when legacies are built. If you want to be there for those moments, this is your chance.
Better value in some cases: Even though the tickets might cost more, when balanced against what you get (intensity, perks, memorable experience), many fans find postseason New England Revolution tickets fetch greater value per dollar compared to regular season games, especially when you consider resale value or experiential payoff.
