Green Bay Packers vs. Detroit Lions
The Packers and Lions have been playing in some form since 1930 (the Lions franchise played as the Portsmouth Spartans until 1934). Green Bay and Detroit have played in the same division since the 1930s. The two teams have the oldest rivalry in the NFL and one of the oldest in pro sports.
The Packers have the edge over Detroit in the rivalry: their winning percentage over the Lions is over 60%. Green Bay has also had more success against the rest of the NFL. The Packers have won two Super Bowls since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, while Detroit is still working towards its first Super Bowl appearance. Both the Packers and the Lions appeared in the Playoffs in 2016
The Lions have shown steady improvement in recent years. After a disastrous 2008 season in which they lost all 16 regular season games, Detroit has rebounded and made three playoff appearances. The Lions drafted their current quarterback, Matthew Stafford, with the first overall pick they earned from their last-place 2008 season.
After Brett Favre’s retirement and trade prior to the 2008 season, rookie Aaron Rodgers took over for the Packers and has been the QB in Green Bay ever since. Rodgers led the Packers to a Super Bowl win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2010.
Historic Packers vs. Lions Games
Miracle in Motown: The Lions had a two point lead late in the game, but a facemask penalty gave Aaron Rodgers and the Packers one last chance to score. With no time left on the clock, Rodgers scrambled away from the Lions’ defenders and lobbed a long Hail Mary pass down the field. The improbable play worked: tight end Richard Rodgers caught the pass in the end zone, and the Packers scored a game-winning touchdown to steal the win from their rivals in Detroit. The Lions had led by as many as 20 points in the game.
For the 2016 Division Title: Both teams had already clinched a playoff spot, but the NFC North Division title was still on the line in the last game of the 2016 season. The Lions were not able to defeat the streaking Packers to capture their first division title in over 20 years. Green Bay won 31-24, ending their season with a six game winning streak in which Aaron Rodgers threw 15 touchdown passes without throwing a single interception.
