Paul Simon, Sting head to Europe
Paul Simon and Sting, two of music's most prolific artists, are taking their critically-acclaimed On Stage Together tour to Europe.
The 18-city tour will kick off Friday, March 13, 2015 in Krakow Poland, to be followed by performances in Prague, Berlin, Oslo, Stockholm, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Koln, Zurich, Munich, Milan, Vienna, Paris, Dublin, Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester & London.
The duo and long-time friends will play more than 30 of their greatest hits during each show, including "Boy in the Bubble," "Fields of Gold," "Mother & Child Reunion," "Every Breath You Take," "The Boxer" and "Diamonds on the Sole of Her Shoes."
The UK portion of the tour begins April 7 in Dublin at 3Arena before moving on to some other huge arenas – Glasgow's The SSE Hydro, Birmingham's LG Arena, Manchester's Phones 4U Arena and London's The O2.
Arthur Fogel, president of global touring at Live Nation, no doubt echoed the sentiments of many fans when he said, "We are thrilled to be bringing the tour to Europe … The run in North America was an incredible success on all levels. These two legendary talents deliver an unforgettable night of music."
Simon recently returned to another famed venue -- Studio 8H in Manhattan -- to close out "Saturday Night Live's 40th anniversary special." Backed by Lenny Pickett and co., Simon performed a rendition of "Still Crazy After All These Years," accentuated by a saxophone solo from Pickett. Overall, the festivities were very music-heavy, featuring Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake on a song-and-dance number, Kanye West performing a medley of Tunes, and Martin Short and Maya Rudolph in a tribute to SNL's best musical-comedy moments.
Paul Simon joins Sting on tour (Updated 1/19/14)
Paul Simon and Sting are about to share a stage together. Or should we say they will be, "On Stage Together," which is the official name of their 2014 tour.
Sure, we're not exactly…sure what they're going to sing. But does it really matter? You don't need a designated title to a concert tour when two legends decide to do a mash-up of the marquee. All you need to know is that the idea for tour grew out of a show Sting and Simon played together in May 2013 where they performed everything from acoustic versions of "The Boxer" and "Fields of Sting" as duets.
This tour, which kicks off February 8, 2014 in Houston, will include both Simon's band as well as Sting's band. Each artist will play alone, and they'll also play together. Beyond that, the set list, stage design and many other secrets are being kept under wraps.
Simon's tour will be briefly interrupted at the end of March, but for good reason. The Civil Wars' Joy Williams, soul singer Bettye LaVette and Husker Du's Bob Mould will lead a tribute to Simon set to take place at New York City's famed Carnegie Hall on March 31.
The show will also feature Steely Dan's lead guitarist Jon Herington and jazz singer Madeleine Peyroux, among others. It is the 10th installment of a series used to raise money for music education programs. Proceeds from this year's show will go to benefit six different organizations, including the American Symphony Orchestra's Music Notes, Church Street School for Music and Art, Young Audiences New York, Fixing Instruments for Kids in School, Little Kids Rock and the Center for Arts Education.
Simon's Spectacular Solo Career (Updated December 5, 2012)
Of a career that was born on experimentation of different sounds, Paul Simon has experienced the most success as a solo artist stepping away from the folk-rock style of the 1950's and 60's that made him famous. In fact, it was in the mid-1980's that Simon's music took a fairly drastic turn – a change that was met with resounding success.
Simon, who became interested in (and obviously influenced by) South African music, brought that sound to his album "Graceland" in 1986. The project became the biggest-selling solo album of his career, and won him a Grammy for Album of the Year. Subscribing to the theory of 'if it ain't broke, don' t fix it,' he delivered "The Rhythm of the Saints" four years later, which was filled with the sounds and styles of Latin America. It featured the Afro-Brazilian superstars Grupo Cultural Olodum, as well as guest appearances and the writing of some of Brazil's most well-known musicians.
Simon's career renaissance continued in the 90's, as he took on the heady task of writing a Broadway stage musical. "The Capeman" opened at the Marquis Theatre in 1998, but received poor reviews and had an initial run of only 68 performances, blending doo-wop, gospel and Latin music. It still received a Tony award nomination for Best Original Score, and was resurrected and performed at both the Brooklyn Academy of Music and at the Beacon Theatre, along with a concert production of the musical at Central Park's Delacorte Theater.
In 1999, Simon toured on a double bill with Bob Dylan while simultaneously working on his next album. "You're the One," bowed in October 2000, and his next collection of new material didn't come until "Surprise" in 2006. His twelfth studio album, "So Beautiful or So What" was released on April 8, 2011 and debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 – his highest debut on that chart in a career that has spanned well over 50 years.
Simon celebrated the 25th anniversary of his classic album "Graceland" with an African musical extravaganza in London on July 15, 2012. On September 18, he released a new two-CD, one-DVD package called "Paul Simon Live in New York City." It features his performance at Webster Hall on his 2011 U.S. tour.
