Born in London in January of 1951, Phil Collins is a man of many talents. Not only is he a drummer and singer, but he’s also an extraordinary songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and actor. Collins’ career really kicked off in the 1970s after he got his start as the drummer and singer of the English rock band Genesis. It wasn’t until August 1975 that Collins became the band’s lead singer after the departure of Peter Gabriel.
Phil Collins released his first solo album in February of 1981 before returning to record a new Genesis album. It wasn’t until March of 1996 that Collins left Genesis to focus completely on his solo career. However, his career path was not without its share of bumps in the road. In October of 1996 his sixth solo album, Dance into the Light, was met with an overwhelming lack of enthusiasm.
Three years later, Collins reunited with Genesis to record The Carpet Crawlers which reached number 4 on the UK Album Charts and 65 on the US Billboard 200. That same year, Collins performed the soundtrack for Disney’s hit film, Tarzan. The film's lead song, “You'll Be in My Heart,” spent nearly 20 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. Despite a viral infection that left him partially deaf in one ear in 2000, Collins continued to impress his colleagues in the music industry as well as his devoted fans.
It’s not surprising to learn that Phil Collins has taken home a number of awards over the years. These include the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1986 for No Jacket Required and the Grammy for Record of the Year in 1991 for Another Day in Paradise. In addition to his Grammy’s, Collins has earned Academy Awards, Brit Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and many more. In March 2010, Collins was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis.
