About Phosphorescent
Way back in 2001, Athens, Georgia resident Matthew Houck began recording under a brand new nickname – Phosphorescent. For the last 13+ years, it has remained his working moniker, following a period where he also traveled the world under the name Fillup Shack.
No, Houck isn't confused about who he is or where he fits in the musical landscape. Likely, he felt he had a lot to live up to after drawing praise from the London Evening Standard (which called him "the most significant American in his field since Kurt Cobain") and press reviews that compared him to Bob Dylan. Maybe that's why his full-length debut, "A Hundred Times or More" in 2003 actually credited Fillup Shack with the drum recordings in the project's linear notes?
Whatever the case may be, Houck/Phosphorescent really scored big with the release of "Aw Come Aw Wry" in August 2005 and "Pride in 2007." The former drew wide critical acclaim, while the latter was named among the best albums of 2007 by Stylus Magazine and garnered high praise from Pitchfork Media.
"Muchacho," Phosphorescent's 7th studio album, released on March 19, 2013 to strong reviews and has led to a bevy of projects. The lead single, "Song for Zula," was used in the film "The Spectacular Now," and later featured on the soundtrack for the 2014 blockbuster "The Amazing Spider-Man 2."
