Born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1979, Robin Miriam Carlsson -- better known as Robyn -- is a talented Swedish singer, songwriter, and record producer. With an interest in singing from a young age, Robyn recorded the theme song for a Swedish television show called “Lilla Sportspegeln” at just 12 years old. It wasn’t until she performed her first original song on another Swedish show, “Söndagsöppet,” that she was discovered by Swedish composer Meja. At the age of 14, Robyn signed her first record deal.
Not many artists can say they rose to pop fame as a 15-year-old, but Robyn managed to do that and more. After signing with RCA Records in 1994, Robyn released her debut single, “You've Got That Somethin’” in Sweden. One year later, the young star released her first album: Robyn Is Here. She quickly became known for her electropop and dance-pop tunes, drawing more fans in as the years progressed.
Robyn gained fame quite quickly in her home country but it wasn’t until 1997 that her success truly reached the states. Her singles “Show Me Love” and “Do You Know (What It Takes)” reached the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. As she grew into her career, Robyn became even more comfortable with her unique voice and artistic abilities. After deals with both Jive Records and BMG, Robyn decided to create a label of her own in 2005 called “Konichiwa Records.”
Robyn released her fourth album in 2005, “Robyn,” and it was her first number one album in Sweden. With songs influenced by R&B, electronica, rap, and new-age music, Robyn took home three Swedish Grammy Awards in 2006. In 2010, Robyn released not one, not two, but three albums: Body Talk, Body Talk Pt. 1, and Body Talk Pt. 2. Following the success of her albums, Robyn went on to perform at the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize concert and even guest-starred on an episode of “Gossip Girl.”
The Swedish star is still making new music. In fact, Robyn is slated to headline the Roskilde Music Festival in Denmark in 2019. She is also kicking off a North American tour in support of her latest album, Honey.
With an impressive career and track record, Robyn has a number of hit songs. Below are some of her most popular tracks:
- Missing U
- Do You Know
- Show Me Love
- Hang with Me
- My Only Reason
- U Should Know Better
- With Every Heart Beat
- Do You Really Want Me
Throughout the course of her storied career, Robyn has collaborated with hit singers and bands, including Röyksopp, Neneh Cherry, Deadmau5, Snoop Dogg, The Lonely Island, and more.
Seeing Robyn in concert is a multisensory experience – from the dramatic flashing lights to her quirky style and frenetic energy, fans can’t help but feel the beat and dance along. Not one to stay still, Robyn is known for her dance moves and getting her audience amped up. Her albums don’t lie – Robyn knows how to make a body talk. She’s also been known to do a cover or two, including Röyksopp’s “The Girl and the Robot.”
