Jaffe's Career Continues Upward Trend
She came onto the music scene like a house of fire, and hasn't slowed down. And if her latest album, "The Body Wins," is any indication, Sarah Jaffe's career will continue its upward trend.
Though critics and fans were quick to point out that "The Body Wins" is drastically different than Jaffe's first album, "Suburban Nature," the praise for the change has been universal. Words like "confident" and "dynamic" have been used quite liberally, and Jaffe herself has been tearing up the road, bringing the material to the New Multitudes Tour and other shows where she's played the headliner.
Jaffe also used 2013 to step even more outside her comfort zone. Just how far? Let's just say that when rapper Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP 2" dropped on November 5, 2013, Jaffe's name was featured prominently on the CD insert. That's because she wrote the first track, "Bad Guy," along with Texas hip-hop producer S1 (Symbolyc One), and her vocals are featured on the track.
Jaffe confirmed on her Facebook page that she wrote the hook for "Bad Guy" and sings it. Beyond that, she has joined with S1 to form a new band called The Dividends. The two have been in studio with Dr. Dre, who produced "The Marshall Mathers LP 2" with Rick Rubin.
Look for more of Jaffe on the road in 2014, including a date at the Granada Theater in Dallas on January 25th with openers Zhora and Sam Lao.
'A major new talent' emerges in Texas (Updated December 5, 2012)
The saying goes that everything is bigger in Texas. If that's the case, Denton native Sarah Jaffe should have quite the capacious career.
Hailed as "a major new talent," Jaffe has amassed quite a following since her 2008 EP, "Even Born Again." After thriving on the independent music scene, she took home a haul of awards from the 2008 Dallas Observer Music Awards, including Best Folk/Acoustic Act, Best Female Vocalist and Best Solo Act. The following year she signed to Kirtland Records and released her first full-length album, "Suburban Nature," in May 2010.
In 2011, Jaffe released "The Way Sound Leaves a Room," which was laced with a more Indie-Rock sound. The EP included a cover of the Drake song, "Shut it Down," and came packaged with a DVD of Jaffe's live show at the Wyly Theater at the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas.
Jaffe had the biggest year of her career in 2012, as she opened on the New Multitudes Tour to introduce fans to songs from her next album. On April 21, she debuted her second full-length LP, "The Body Wins." Hailed by critics, many noted the album was a huge departure from Jaffe's previous material. Instead, this project focused more heavily on rhythm, with songs constructed around simple melodies. The first single, "Glorified High," became a fan favorite for its infectious energy.
Jaffe joined Norah Jones and Blitzen Trapper for tour dates throughout June and July 2012. She then joined up with State Radio for a handful of dates beginning November 8 in Cleveland and ending November 17 in Boulder, Colorado. She'll ring in the New Year at Kessler Theater in Dallas on Monday, December 31.
