Famed duo gets across their Bridge Over Troubled Water (Created March 27, 2013)
This popular music duo rose to fame in the mid 1960's, both on the strength of their vocal harmonies and for recordings that would be forever etched in the collective conscious of the American public.
You'd know them if you heard them. Some of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel's most popular songs included "The Sound of Silence," "Homeward Bound," "A Hazy Shade of Winter," "Mrs. Robinson," "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "The Boxer" and "Cecilia." This impressive catalog of hits won them several Grammy Awards, an induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Long Island Music Hall of Fame.
Though they were famous for their music, Simon & Garfunkel were also just as well known for their breakups – the main one coming in 1970 due in large part to artistic disagreements between both men. Of course they would reunite in every decade to perform and tour together, and in 1981 drew more than a half million people to "The Concert in Central Park." The massive turnout prompted the duo to go on a world tour, including a stop at New York's Shea Stadium in 1983. Twenty years later, they were presented with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
On March 24, 2013, "Sounds of Silence" was added to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress. It was just one of 25 recordings selected by the government agency that "reflects the diversity and creativity of the American experience."
According to Rolling Stone magazine, Simon wrote the title track of the album in response to the assassination of John F. Kennedy. It failed to gain traction as a single, but was reworked and soared in popularity the following year.
