Steelers vs. Ravens Details
Steelers vs. Ravens
One of the youngest rivalries in the National Football League, the Ravens and Steelers have made up for lost time by forming one of the most physical and hard-hitting rivalries in the sport. Their rivalry formed in 1996, when the Ravens were added to the NFL as an expansion club, joining the Steelers in the AFC Central division, which eventually became the present-day AFC North.
The rivalry between the Steelers and Ravens has been strengthened by the fact that the two teams have taken turns winning division titles, with their excellent performances often overshadowing those of the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns in their division. Both teams have also won two Super Bowls since the reintroduction of the NFL to Baltimore, making them two of the most successful clubs in the entire NFL during that time period, highlighting the urgency of rivalry games between the squads.
Historic Steelers vs. Ravens Games
Among the notable games in the rivalry between the Steelers and Ravens are plenty of big hits, and big plays. The 2008 AFC Championship Game is one of the most noteworthy examples, with a clutch defensive play making the headlines and earning Pittsburgh a conference championship. Steelers safety, Troy Polamalu, intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown that would give Pittsburgh an insurmountable lead for the AFC crown. The Steelers went on to defeat the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII thanks to Polamalu's heroics.
Other memorable moments in the Steelers/Ravens rivalry include Antonio Brown's 'Immaculate Extension' at the goal line to defeat the Ravens on Christmas Day of 2016. The game was competitive throughout, with the Steelers scoring a 31-27 victory at the dying moments of the contest on Brown's touchdown. Pittsburgh earned yet another AFC North title with the win, while the loss knocked the Ravens out of the playoffs.
On Thanksgiving night in 2013, the Ravens and Steelers played another classic. The Ravens won the game by a final score of 22-20, with a key defensive stand proving to be the difference near the goal line. Pittsburgh scored a touchdown late in the fourth quarter and had a two point conversion attempt to tie the game, but the Ravens managed to stand tall from two yards out, securing a thrilling victory.
