The first weekend of Coachella is officially a wrap, but the dust won’t be settled for long as weekend two is set to begin on April 21st. For the thousands of music lovers, celebrities and fashionistas who attended – Coachella Weekend One was an unforgettable weekend packed with breathtaking performances and vibrant energy.
As always, Coachella did not disappoint when it came to the lineup. From the electrifying performances of Bad Bunny and BLACKPINK to the soulful tunes of Frank Ocean – Coachella Weekend One had it all. And let’s not forget about the last-minute additions and surprise guests that shocked fans throughout the weekend.
Whether you missed out on the live-action or want to relive the magic – here are the highlights from Coachella Weekend One.
Blink-182 Brings nostalgia to Coachella Valley
The world got a sneak peek into the Blink-182 tour when all three OG members took to the Sahara Stage on Friday Night. Talk about an elder emo’s dream come true!
Their Coachella performance marked the first time Travis Barker, Tom DeLonge and Mark Hoppus have performed together since 2008, and they did not disappoint. With Travis Barker surviving a tragic plane crash in 2008, Mark Hoppus beating lymphoma and Tom DeLonge back after an eight-year hiatus, their Coachella performance was truly special for everyone involved.
Crowds flocked to the stage at 6:30 PM PT to catch the iconic rock performance as Blink-182 opened with witty banter, dirty jokes and their classic song, ’Family Reunion,’ packing out the arena and spilling into adjacent areas. The band went on to play classic bangers like ‘I Miss You’ and ‘All The Small Things,’ along with their new release ‘Edging,’
If you missed their performance at Coachella, don’t worry. Blink-182 will kick off their 2023-2024 World Tour on May 4th.
Bad Bunny, the Puerto Rican reggaetón star, made history on Friday night as the first solo Latino artist to headline the festival. Bad Bunny swooned the audience with his beautiful soul-felt music while sprinkling in some moving speeches about the history of Latin music and the criticism he has faced in the past.
Special guest and icon Post Malone joined him on stage, playing the guitar for ‘La Cancion’ and ‘Yonaguni,’ but unfortunately, there were some technical difficulties that altered the sound quality. Still, the crowd went wild for the ever-so-loved Posty dances, making for an unforgettable collaboration.
Bad Bunny was also joined by various other stars during his two-hour set, including Jowell y Randy, Nengo Flow, Jhayco and Dahian El Apechao and his band. Despite the technical difficulties, Bad Bunny brought the house down with his electrifying energy and unmatched stage presence.
By the end of the night, Bad Bunny had quickly become the most talked about artist at Coachella 2023.
PINKCHELLA K-pop takeover
Korean K-Pop sensation BLACKPINK also made history as the first K-Pop and all-female group to headline Coachella. The group (Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa) performed four years ago on the Sahara Stage, making their headlining slot a true testament to their growth and talent as musicians.
Their spectacular performance, killer choreography and gothic glittery outfits with a twist of baby pink left the audience in awe. And let’s not forget the drone show that captivated viewers with a 3D light show, making shapes of butterflies, dragons and more in the skylight.
The band performed a few hits together, and later split up to give the audience an individual taste of their unique musical aptitude.
BLACKPINK’s Lisa took the stage for a solo performance that left her fellow Blinks in awe. Her rendition of ‘Money’ was packed with sultry and fierce dance movies, and explicit language, and featured a killer pole dancing set.
Jisoo took the stage confidently for her solo, which was her first big solo performance outside of Korea. Rosé wowed the crowd with an acoustic version of ‘Gone,’ which was coupled with some insane choreography. And Jennie performed an unreleased song ‘You & Me’ with an additional rap verse, which resulted in fans screaming and chanting her name.
Needless to say, this girly powerhouse is pushing cultural boundaries with their explicit performances, and the world is loving every second of it. If you don’t believe us, just check out the millions of posts on Twitter about their epic stage presence.
One fan tweeted, “Still on a high from BLACKPINK’s performance last night at Coachella!! I almost threw up within the first song because I was too excited…”
Frank Ocean delivers unexpected performance
The long-awaited Frank Ocean headlined Coachella day three after a two-year postponement due to COVID-19. And while fans were ecstatic to see him on the lineup – some doubted he would show when the YouTube live broadcasting schedule was released without his name on it and merch tents were high and dry of any Frank Ocean merch.
Fans at home took to Twitter angrily, demanding they see his set and speculating as to why it wasn’t being showcased to the world like the artists who played before him. Some are speculating that Frank Ocean has a reason behind the request not to be live-streamed, whereas others believe it was a broadcasting issue.
The true reasoning is currently unknown, but what we do know is when 10:00 PM PT hit, and Frank Ocean was nowhere to be found, the panic really began.
Nevertheless, the soulful sensation took the stage an hour late and delivered an unforgettable performance. And fans in the crowd happily helped those at home by streaming the set from their phones on various social media accounts.
Frank Ocean began his set by paying tribute to his younger brother, who recently passed away due to a car accident in 2020. The artist spoke on how he and his brother would frequent the Coachella festival and enjoy sets like Rae Shremmerd together. Talk about pulling on our heartstrings.
As for what Frank Ocean’s weekend two set will hold – we’ll have to wait and see. Many are holding tight to the thought that they will get to experience the full production in 4K.
Surprise guests rock the dust at Coachella 2023
When you go to Coachella, it’s a given that you’ll be seeing at least a dozen legendary artists make a surprise appearance throughout the weekend. And this year was no exception. With artists like De La Soul, The Weekend, Diddy and Post Malone popping up on stages unexpectedly, Coachella weekend one was truly a time to remember.
While we thought BLACKPINK was closing out Saturday’s magic – Calvin Harris was added for a final hurrah packed with classic dance hits and the one and only Ellie Goulding. The two performed their recent release and third collaboration, ‘Miracle,’ leaving fans mesmerized.
I’d be remiss for not also mentioning Odesza made a surprise appearance on Saturday at the DoLab stage, laying down electronic heaters and welcoming vocal genius Sudan Archives to perform the remix to her new song ‘Selfish Soul.’
Meanwhile, the visionary icon Billie Eilish joined lyrical wordsmith Labrinth on stage for their song ‘Never Felt So Alone,’ as fans screamed in disbelief and joy. The ironic lyrics of loneliness coupled with a packed crowd of thousands of adoring festival-goers was nothing short of beautiful.
And let’s not forget about Kali Uchis bringing out not one, but three unannounced guests, including Tyler, The Creator, Don Tolliver and Omar Apollo, for a timeless performance. Needless to say, fans went wild, and even the ASL Interpreter had the time of her life. Kali Uchis was also featured as a surprise guest during Kaytranada’s set on Friday evening.
