Thundercat—real name Stephen Lee Bruner (born October 19, 1984, in Los Angeles)—is an American bassist, singer, songwriter, producer and composer known for blending funk, progressive R&B, jazz fusion, soul, electronica and psychedelia. He first emerged as a teen bassist in the crossover‑thrash band Suicidal Tendencies, and grew up in a deeply musical family. Early on, he joined Kamasi Washington and musicians in the West Coast Get Down collective and evolved from a highly respected bassist into a genre‑defying solo artist under the guidance of Flying Lotus and Erykah Badu.
