About Tootsie Tickets
Based on the 1982 comedy film with of the same name, Tootsie is the brainchild of musician and lyricist David Yazbek, with the book written by Robert Horn. A wild and endearing comedy that has audiences laughing right from the start, Tootsie has been updated to reflect modern times. One of the biggest changes is the role of its lead character. Tootsie puts Michael Dorsey on the Broadway stage rather than in a soap opera like the original. According to director Scott Ellis, this is “not your grandfather’s Tootsie,” so fans of the movie should be prepared for more than a few surprises. This take on the classic is fresh and fun. After a warm reception during the workshop and 2018 previews, Tootsie officially launched on Broadway in 2019. Opening with an all-star cast that includes Tony Award nominee Santino Fontana and Lillie Cooper, Tootsie is being hailed as one of the best stage adaptations of a popular movie ever. The musical Tootsie is already creating buzz, following in the footsteps of its movie inspiration. The Tootsie stage production has been reworked to reflect modern day, preserving the aspects of the movie that led the Library of Congress to select the film for preservation in the National Film Registry. The movie, which was the second most profitable film in 1982, was deemed culturally and historically significant, influencing many productions over the past three decades. It’s no surprise that this timeless story is now on Broadway for the next generation of fans to enjoy. David Yazbek’s music for Tootsie has been touted as clever and witty by critics, bringing the stage adaption high praise early on. Composer and lyricist Yazbek is no stranger to Broadway success, with several awards celebrating his talent, including the 2018 Tony Award for Best Original Score (The Band’s Visit). Another talent behind the scenes is Director Scott Ellis, who has been nominated for dozens of awards. Ellis’ wins include the 1994 Outer Critics Circle Award (She Loves Me), and two Drama Desk Awards (The World Goes Round and A Little Night Music), all three for Outstanding Director of a Musical. Tootsie the musical opened at Marquis Theatre. The first preview was on March 29, 2019, with Tootsie officially launching on April 23, 2019.
