Golden State Warriors vs. San Antonio Spurs Details
San Antonio Spurs vs. Golden State Warriors
The Spurs and Warriors are two of the NBA’s most formidable teams. At the end of the 2015-16 season, they became the first 65-win teams to play against each other. Since 2000, either the Spurs or Warriors have represented the Western Conference 8 times in the NBA Finals. The Warriors have made three consecutive NBA Finals appearances under the leadership of coach Steve Kerr, who won two NBA Championships as a player with the Spurs. The recent rivalry between the two teams has been fueled by their frequent playoff matchups. The Spurs defeated the Warriors in a 2013 playoff series, and the Warriors swept the Spurs in the 2017 Western Conference Finals.
Consistency has been the theme in San-Antonio. The Spurs last missed the playoffs in the 1996-97 season and have made the playoffs in 26 of 27 years going back to the 1988-89 season. In that span, the Spurs went to six NBA Finals series and won five NBA Championships. The Spurs have had some of the NBA’s best players over the past few decades. Stars like David Robinson, Tim Duncan, and Kawhi Leonard have kept the Spurs near the top of the league over the years.
The Warriors have assembled a “Super Team” with their starting lineup, which includes Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. The group is one of the best ever assembled on an NBA roster, and they’re searching for a fourth consecutive Finals appearance with the Warriors
Historic Spurs vs. Warriors Games
2013 Eastern Conference Semifinals, Game 6: Stephen Curry, who had 44 points in a Game 1 loss, emerged from this playoff series with the Spurs as one of the elite players in the NBA. Curry couldn’t stop the Spurs this year, however. In the decisive Game 6, the Spurs’ defense held the Warriors to just 82 points. San Antonio moved on to the Western Conference Finals and eventually made the NBA Finals.
2017 Western Conference Finals, Game 1: After the Spurs lost Kawhi Leonard to an ankle injury in the third quarter, the game’s momentum shifted towards Golden State. The Warriors pulled off a 25 point comeback with high-scoring games from their star players. Stephen Curry, who led the way during the fourth quarter, had 40 points and made a crucial 3-pointer late in the game to tie the score. Kevin Durant scored 34 points, including ten in a row in the fourth quarter. The Warriors took a 113-111 win and dominated the rest of the series. They moved on to the NBA Finals and won their second championship in three years.
When do the Warriors play the Spurs?
The Warriors and Spurs play in separate divisions in the Western Conference. The Warriors play in the Pacific Division and the Spurs play in the Southwest. NBA teams in the same conference but separate divisions will play each other either three or four times a year. There is also always a chance that the two teams could meet in the first three rounds of the playoffs, as they often have.
