About Y La Bamba (Created July 5, 2013)
The popular "La Bamba" is a Mexican folk song best known from a 1958 adaptation by Ritchie Valens. But Y La Bamba, on the other hand, began in 2008 with frontwoman Luz Elena Mendoza, who wanted her own stage name to play under. So… Y La Bamba? Y Not.
An open mic night at a sake bar in Northeast Portland was the catalyst to kick start Y La Bamba as a group. It was there that Mendoza met Ben Mayercord and the two began playing together. Mike Kitson was later added on drums, and the addition of Eric Shrapel on accordion and Sean Flinn on lead guitar helped to make Y La Bamba the complete package.
It didn't take long before the band attracted a lot of attention in Portland, Oregon. They played PDX Pop Now!, a free annual festival, and were off and running. And while "Alida St.," (a collection of home recordings by Mendoza) was released in December of 2008, it was the band's first full-length album, "Lupon," that had everyone talking in 2010.
Keeping with the calendar in offering a new release every two years, Y La Bamba rolled out "Court the Storm" in 2012. Their haunting second full-length effort helped to draw critical praise from the likes of NPR and Rolling Stone, thanks to lush vocal harmonies and stunning musical arrangements. Six of the songs are mexi-influenced folk Americana, and "Oh February" is said to be one of Y La Bamba's most listenable songs to date.
