ALCS - American League Championship Series Tickets

American League Championship Series

The American League Championship Series has an incredibly rich history. Played first in 1969, some of the best players in the history of the game have participated in this round. As you might expect, two titans of the American League – the Red Sox and the Yankees – have played a prominent role in ALCS history. What you may not realize, however, is that the early years were dominated by two teams not from New York or Boston. Those teams would be the Baltimore Orioles, who won the first three ALCS series ever played, and the Oakland Athletics, who won the next three.

The greatest run of success in the ALCS does belong to the Yankees, who won four in a row from 1998 – 2001. The first three of those ALCS victories turned into World Series titles, although they were denied a fourth straight World Series by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001. The Yankees also won the ALCS in 1996 and 2003, meaning they represented the American League in the World Series for a total of six times in eight seasons.

The Aaron Boone Game

There are far too many memorable ALCS games to mention here, but one that stands out in the minds of many is the “Aaron Boone Game.” This was Game Seven of the 2003 ALCS, played at Yankee Stadium. It was the Red Sox who were challenging the Yankees, and the game went to extra innings. In the bottom of the 11th, Aaron Boone hit a walk-off home run off of knuckleballer Tim Wakefield. The crowd at Yankee Stadium went wild in the aftermath of this incredible moment. Boone had a solid major league career over the course of 12 years, but his one defining moment will always be that single swing.
