The stadium is named after Martha Williams-Brice, a philanthropist whose family made significant contributions to the University of South Carolina. While originally modest in size when it opened in 1934, the stadium has grown through multiple expansions and renovations into the massive SEC fortress it is today.
History of Williams–Brice Stadium
1934: Opened as Carolina Stadium with around 17,600 seats.
1941: The Works Progress Administration (WPA) expanded the facility.
1972: After a major gift from Martha Williams-Brice, the stadium was renamed Williams–Brice Stadium.
1970s–1980s: Several renovations increased seating capacity, pushing it past 70,000.
2000s–2010s: Upgrades added new video boards, premium seating, LED lighting and improved concourses.
Today, it’s one of the loudest and most intimidating venues in the SEC, consistently ranked among the best atmospheres in college football.
Getting to Williams–Brice Stadium
By Car: Located just south of downtown Columbia, the stadium is easily accessible via I-77, I-26, and I-20. On game days, traffic is heavy—plan ahead and arrive early.
Parking: Numerous lots surround the stadium, including Gamecock Park, a premier tailgating area with 52 acres of parking, green space and amenities. Parking passes are typically required and should be purchased in advance.
Shuttles: The Comet Shuttle System offers convenient transportation from various points in Columbia to the stadium.
Tailgating Hotspots: Gamecock fans are famous for their tailgating. Popular areas include Gamecock Park, Fairgrounds Lot and the Cockaboose Railroad, a line of privately owned luxury railcars converted into tailgate suites right next to the stadium.
