Arizona Cardinals vs. Carolina Panthers
Recent playoff matchups between the Panthers and Cardinals have been the catalyst for a budding rivalry between the two teams. The Panthers played the Cardinals at home in the 2015 NFC Wildcard Game and the 2016 NFC Championship. The Panthers won both games and appeared in the Super Bowl following their 2016 NFC Championship win.
The Panthers’ dynamic offense runs through quarterback Cam Newton. Newton has been the starter in Carolina since 2011, and he has led the Panthers to three playoff berths and one Super Bowl appearance. Newton is both a passing and rushing threat--he holds the NFL record for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. His best season came in 2015, when the Panthers went 15-1 during the regular season and advanced to the Super Bowl. Newton was the NFL’s MVP.
The most famous Cardinal is wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, who is playing in his 14th NFL season. Fitzgerald was the overtime hero for the Cardinals in the Divisional Game of the 2016 playoffs. After a last-minute comeback by the Packers on a Hail Mary pass, the Cardinals got the ball first in overtime. Fitzgerald caught a pass on the first play and took the ball all the way to the Packers’ 5 yard line. Fitzgerald ultimately scored the game winning touchdown on a shovel pass from Carson Palmer.
Historic Cardinals vs. Panthers Games
2015 NFC Wildcard Game: The Cardinals had the better record during the regular season, but Arizona had to play the first game of the playoffs without starting QB Carson Palmer, and the Panthers took advantage. The Cardinals managed only 77 yards, and the Panthers defense intercepted quarterback Ryan Lindley twice and sacked him twice. Cam Newton threw two touchdown passes, and the Panthers won 27-16. The win was the first playoff win of Newton’s career.
2016 NFC Championship: In the following season, the rematch between the Panthers and Cardinals took place in the NFC Championship. With a trip to the Super Bowl on the line, the Panthers played one of their best games of the season. They scored 49 points on the Cardinals -- a record for the NFC title game -- and Cam Newton had two passing and two rushing touchdowns. Carolina’s defense also starred in the game: they intercepted Carson Palmer four times and forced him to fumble twice. Carolina advanced to the Super Bowl, where they were defeated by the Denver Broncos.
