Seahawks vs. Panthers Details
Carolina Panthers vs. Seattle Seahawks
Though the Panthers and Seahawks have played each other since the start of the new millennium (the Panthers came into the NFL in 1995 but didn’t play the Seahawks until 2000), the teams’ rivalry has festered only recently. Both teams have been among the best in the NFC and have played a number of close games against each other.
The Panthers’ dynamic offense runs through quarterback Cam Newton. Newton has been the starter in Carolina since 2011, and he has led the Panthers to three playoff berths and one Super Bowl appearance. Newton is both a passing and rushing threat--he holds the NFL record for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. His best season came in 2015, when the Panthers went 15-1 during the regular season and advanced to the Super Bowl. Newton was the NFL’s MVP.
Newton’s rival in Seattle is Russell Wilson, who found quick success with the Seahawks after he was drafted in 2012. In 2012, Wilson was the NFL’s rookie of the year, and he tied an NFL record for passing touchdowns by a rookie. He and Seahawks made it to the Super Bowl in his second season, and the Seahawks won the game against the Denver Broncos by a landslide. Altogether, Wilson has led the Seahawks to two Super Bowls and five consecutive playoff berths from 2012 to 2016.
Historic Panthers vs. Seahawks Games
2014 Divisional Playoffs: Russell Wilson and the Seahawks were the defending Super Bowl champions, and they were coming off a season where they finished 12-4 and won their division. The Panthers finished their season with a record of 7-8-1. They finished first in their division even though they didn’t finish with a winning record.
Carolina’s defense was able to prevent Seahawks’ running back Marshawn Lynch from scoring, but it fell short against Wilson. Wilson finished with three touchdowns and converted on all of his throws on third down. It was also a big day for the Seahawks defense: they forced three turnovers, and safety Kam Chancellor returned an interception 90 yards for a touchdown. Seattle won the game 31-17 to advance to the NFC Championship. They ultimately advanced to the Super Bowl for a second consecutive year but were defeated by Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
2015 Divisional Playoffs: The Panthers got their revenge on the Seahawks in the very next season. The Panthers had gone 15-1 during the regular season, and they built a 31-0 lead against the Seahawks going into the second half. The Seahawks clawed their way back once the second half started and reduced the gap in score to just one touchdown, but they weren’t able to tie the Panthers. Carolina won 31-24 and advanced to the NFC Championship. They went on to make the Super Bowl, but lost to the Denver Broncos.
When do the Panthers play the Seahawks?
The Panthers and Seahawks play in different divisions of the NFC. The Panthers play in the NFC South and the Seahawks play in the West. The NFL has a rotating scheduling system that means teams not in the same division won’t necessarily play each other every year. The two teams faced each other in the 2016 regular season, but they did not play each other in 2017. They can also meet in the first three rounds of the playoffs.
