The tie went to penalties, and Chicago keeper Zach Thornton became a club legend with three consecutive penalty saves to put the Fire in the MLS Cup Finals in the club’s first season.

The Fire were unfazed and came out firing on all cylinders as Jerzy Podbrozny converted in the 29th to put his team up 1-0. Diego Gutiérrez scored the second goal before halftime, and the Fire controlled the game and cruised to their first MLS Cup victory. Their next MLS Cup final appearance game came in 2003, but this time out they fell to the San Jose Earthquakes. The Fire were favorites going in, and they did end up winning the U.S. Open Cup that season.
