About David Gilmour
Gilmour stands as one of history's great guitarists (Updated January 2, 2013)
In music history, few bands have had a legacy endure quite like Pink Floyd. Even with its heyday in the 1970's, co-founder Roger Waters was recently named the third most successful touring artist of 2012. Joining him onstage at London's O2 Arena for one of those stops was former band mate David Gilmour, the former guitarist, lead singer and songwriter of the popular progressive rock band.
It was 25 years ago – December 23, 1987 – that the quarreling bandmates finalized the breakup of Pink Floyd. Before then, Gilmour had contributed to every one of the band's albums except its debut project. He became a contributing member of the group in time for their sophomore effort, "A Saucerful of Secrets," having taken the place of former frontman Syd Barrett due to Barrett's reported erratic behavior. Once a full-fledged member, Gilmour assumed the role of the band's lead guitarist and also took over lead vocal duties.
When the relationship between Waters and Gilmour began to sour, Gilmour produced and recorded solo albums as a way to distance himself from Pink Floyd. They included 1978's eponymous project, 1984's "About Face" and 2006's "On An Island." In between, he also took up various roles as a producer, writer and musician for a number of other acts, including Paul McCartney, Elton John, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Bob Dylan and many, many others.
On July 2, 2005 Gilmour played with Pink Floyd at Live 8 and donated all of his resulting profits to charity. He later announced in an interview with a newspaper that Pink Floyd would most likely never tour or write material together again.
In 2011, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked Gilmour number 14 in their list of the greatest guitarists of all time.
