Depeche Mode releases "Live in Berlin"

There's a reason that Depeche Mode is still being referred to as 'one of the most lucrative touring machines in modern music.' Their most recent tour played to more than 2.4 million people in 32 countries, grossing somewhere in the neighborhood of $150 million.

It would only make sense now for this British trio to tackle another digital endeavor – film. Over two nights in November 2013 at Berlin's O2 World Arena, Depeche Mode recorded what would become a DVD release called "Live in Berlin." Directed by Antoin Corbijn ("A Most Wanted Man"), the inside look at the state-of-the-art tech-rock tour also debuted with one-off theatrical screenings in select cities.

The deluxe version of "Live in Berlin" offers a 'total immersion, all access experience' for fans. It includes the DVD, full show audio on two CDs, a second DVD called "Live in Berlin," behind the scenes footage, multiple interviews with the band, and an acoustic session.

The audio/video release of "Live in Berlin" wasn't the only thing Depeche Mode had to celebrate in 2014. The trio won the award for Best International Group – Rock/Pop at the ECHO Awards in Germany back in March. They were also nominated in the category Album des Jahres for "Delta Machine" but lost to Helene Fischer's "Farbenspiel."

Depeche Mode also spent a good deal of time in charity mode this past year, helping to raise over $14 million to help bring clean water to people in developing countries.

Depeche Mode wasn't just an 80's techno-pop band. These guys were (and likely still are) the most popular electronic band the world has known, tapping into a public fascination with synthesizers to cross over from the top of the British charts to the ranks of the U.S. pop charts.

With a name inspired by a French fashion magazine, what else did you expect from Depeche Mode? Yes, original members Dave Gahan, Martin Gore, Andy Fletcher and Vince Clarke dwindled down to just the trio of Gahan, Gore and Fletcher… but they were perhaps more successful than ever.

All things told, Depeche Mode has had 49 songs in the UK Singles Chart and 13 Top 10 albums, two of which debuted at No. 1. They have sold over 100 million albums and singles worldwide -- an astonishing feat for any band -- and the swell of sales has landed them on lists like "50 Bands That Changed the World," not to mention ranking among VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of All Time."

When fans speak of Depeche Mode, they also talk of the group's longevity. Even back in 2009, their U.S. tour was the country's 20th highest grossing of the year. And now, in 2013, they have taken their synths and guitars back on the road to bring their famed version of electro-pop to a new generation of fans. The current tour will roll across Europe including Portugal, France, Italy, the Czech Republic and Poland. The North American tour is followed by concerts in Abu Dhabi and Europe through February 2014.
