About Devo Tickets
Devo, the avant-garde art rock band best known for their quirky style and satirical outlook, formed in Akron, Ohio, in the early 1970s. The group was founded by art students Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale, who coined the term “de-evolution” — the idea that instead of progressing, mankind was regressing. This concept became the philosophical backbone of the band’s identity, influencing everything from their lyrics to their visuals. The original lineup solidified with the addition of Bob Mothersbaugh, Bob Casale, and drummer Alan Myers, and Devo quickly built a reputation for their experimental performances and confrontational themes.
Devo rose to prominence in the late 1970s with their debut album Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! produced by Brian Eno. The album introduced their robotic sound, jerky rhythms and cynical worldview. But it was their 1980 follow-up, Freedom of Choice, that brought mainstream success with the hit single “Whip It.” With its infectious synth riff and eccentric music video featuring energy domes (their now-iconic red plastic hats), “Whip It” became a pop culture sensation and earned Devo a place in the new wave movement.
Throughout the 1980s, Devo continued to innovate both musically and visually, incorporating early computer graphics, matching industrial uniforms and performance art into their act. Albums like New Traditionalists and Oh, No! It’s Devokept their loyal fanbase engaged, even as mainstream attention waned. Their pioneering use of music videos helped define the early MTV era, and their influence reached far beyond their chart performance — shaping artists across genres and generations.
Though their commercial output slowed by the 1990s, Devo remained a powerful live act and cult favorite. In recent years, they’ve seen a resurgence of appreciation, with tributes from artists like Nine Inch Nails, Daft Punk and St. Vincent. In 2023, the band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, acknowledging their decades of innovation and cultural impact. Now, in 2025, they’re co-headlining the Cosmic De-Evolution Tour with The B-52s — a perfect pairing of two legendary, genre-defying bands who’ve always marched to the beat of their own synthetic drums.
