Marshall Bruce Mathers III, known by the world as Eminem, was born in Saint Joseph, Missouri in 1972. Raised by a single mother, Eminem struggled in school but found passion through his rhyming skills. In 1996, Eminem released his first solo album, “Infinite”, on the local Web Entertainment label. While that album didn’t draw much attention, the “Slim Shady EP” caught the attention of famous producer, Dr. Dre – he quickly signed Eminem to his Interscope imprint, Aftermath.
Once he partnered with Dr. Dre, Eminem’s career took off. Dre co-produced “The Slim Shady LP”, which debuted on the pop chart at #3 in February 1999 and went on to sell over three million copies! The album scored Eminem a Grammy for Best Rap Album. Folks were drawn to Eminem’s alter ego, “Slim Shady”, and his willingness to speak his mind about anyone and anything. His lyrics are not only catchy, but entertaining as well.
In 2000, Eminem released his third studio album, "The Marshall Mathers LP”. It sold over 1.5 million copies its first week in stores. Eventually, this became one of only 92 albums to ever achieve diamond certification – this honor is given to artists whose albums reach sales of over ten million copies.
His success didn’t stop there – in the summer of 2002, Eminem released “The Eminem Show”, which sold over a million copies in its first week of release. The album eventually went on to sell over ten million copies – that’s right, he’d now achieved two diamond certified albums. Following the release of that album, Eminem was nominated for two Grammys: Record of the Year and Best Male Rap Solo Performance.
Also in 2002, Eminem took a dive into the world of film, starring as himself in “8 Mile”, a dramatization of his coming of age. Eminem took home an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2003 thanks to “8 Mile”.
Over the course of his extremely successful career, so far, Eminem has won fifteen Grammy Awards. Eminem has collaborated with a number of award-winning artists, including Rihanna, 50 Cent, Kendrick Lamar, P!nk, Ed Sheeran, and Sia.
Eminem is known for producing hit after hit. Here are some of his most popular songs throughout the years:
- "Lose Yourself"
- "Love the Way You Lie"
- "Without Me"
- "Cleanin’ Out My Closet"
- "The Real Slim Shady"
- "My Name Is"
- "Just Lose It"
Eminem loves stirring the pot with his controversial and often racy lyrics – in fact, he admits to it: “Everybody, just follow me / Cause we need a little controversy / Cause it feels so empty, without me.” His raps are often peppered with expletives and his music videos are always entertaining.
So, what’s it like to see the real Slim Shady in concert? It’s energetic, lively, and, at times, intense. Eminem raps with true conviction. Whether he’s spitting rhymes from his latest tracks on “Revival” or stirring up nostalgia with “The Eminem Show”, this artist knows how to put on an exciting show for his fans.
