George Harvey Strait (born May 18, 1952 in Poteet, Texas) is a legendary country music singer, songwriter, and performer often called the “King of Country.” He grew up in South Texas, raised around ranch life and steeped in traditional country and Western swing styles. After serving in the U.S. Army, he attended Southwest Texas State University, where he played in a band (Ace in the Hole) before moving toward a solo country career. He signed with MCA Records in 1981, and his first single “Unwound” became a hit, launching what would be one of the most commercially successful careers in country music history.

Over the years Strait has become known for his consistency—both in productivity and in sticking with traditional country sounds.
