Houston Texans Preseason Details

The NFL added the Houston Texans as an expansion franchise in 1999. Since the team’s inaugural season, fans throughout eastern Texas have been attracted by a modern stadium and strong community presence. The Texans established their place in the city’s sports landscape by starting the season at home. Houston has conducted training camps and preseason practices in the city each season with the exception of two years at the Greenbrier resort in West Virginia.

The Texans training complex is located across the parking lot from the team’s home stadium. Fans are able to attend a limited number of preseason practices each season with bleacher seats available at no cost until capacity is reached. The Houston Texans often hold ticket drawings for bleacher seats due to high demand by local fans.

Fans who are able to attend a Texans training camp practice enjoy entertainment beyond the action on the field. The team invites past players as well as the cheerleaders to meet with those in attendance. Live music is scheduled for each open practice day along with kid-friendly football activities. The Houston Texans also bring food trucks from local restaurants to the facility so diehard fans can enjoy food and drink.

Houston Texans have hosted home games at NRG Stadium since its opening as Reliant Stadium in 2002. The Texans lost their first preseason game at the stadium 24-3 against the Miami Dolphins on August 24, 2002. NRG Stadium has been used for Super Bowls, rodeos, college football games, and soccer matches since its opening. This 72,000-seat stadium features a retractable roof to keep fans out of rain and hot weather. Concessions options at NRG Stadium beyond hot dogs and beers come from area vendors like Antone’s Famous Po’ Boys and Killen’s Barbecue.

Houston Texans fans look forward to regional rivalries during the preseason. The Texans play the Dallas Cowboys prior to each regular season. This rivalry benefits from regional proximity and a strong statewide fanbase for the Cowboys. The New Orleans Saints also play the Texans during most preseasons, which recognizes a historical connection between the two cities. Houston also regularly plays western teams like the San Francisco 49ers, the Los Angeles Rams, and the Arizona Cardinals.
