LA Galaxy Playoff History
Through high-profile superstars and playoff successes, the LA Galaxy are one of the most famous soccer teams in North America. They were a founding MLS member and began play in 1996. They hold an impressive amount of titles and boast a list of former and current players that reads like an all-star team. The Galaxy are one of the most decorated MLS teams, and they have had multiple MLS Cup wins.
LA are a perennial playoff team, and they began their MLS playoff history by advancing to the first Final. The Galaxy lost a tight match to D.C. United, but they would soon reach the highest pinnacle. LA finished first in the Western Conference five times before winning the MLS Cup, and they lost one more Final against the San Jose Earthquakes. But, in 2002 the Galaxy would finally lift the MLS’s biggest trophy in a 1-0 win over the New England Revolution. Carlos Ruiz scored an extra-time goal to solidify Los Angeles’s first MLS Cup trophy.
In 2005, Landon Donovan burst onto the MLS scene for the Galaxy and began a restructure of the Galaxy legacy. Donovan is perhaps the most accomplished American player in history, and he plied his trade at the LA side for nearly a decade. In his first season for the club, the Galaxy lifted their second trophy in dramatic fashion. The Final was a rematch against the New England Revolution, and it ended similarly to the last game. In extra time, substitute Guillermo Ramírez buried a late winner and the Galaxy escaped again with a narrow 1-0 win.
The next three seasons the Galaxy failed to qualify for the playoffs, these seasons being the first without the LA team in postseason play. However, in 2007 international superstar David Beckham signed for the Galaxy and brought global attention to the Galaxy. The Galaxy did not win another MLS Cup until the end of the David Beckham era when the club signed potent Irish forward Robbie Keane. With the trio of Donovan, Beckham and Keane the Galaxy won back-to-back MLS Cup Finals to lift the club’s total to four. LA beat the Houston Dynamo in both the 2011 and 2012 Finals to send David Beckham out on a high note.
In 2014, the Galaxy claimed their fifth title, once again ousting the New England Revolution in extra time. Gyasi Zardes scored the first goal, and Robbie Keane came up clutch in the 111th minute to bury the Revolution. Keane was named MVP of the game and solidified his position in club lore.
