New York Islanders Playoff Details

The Islanders missed the playoffs in their first two NHL seasons, but by the 1974-75 season, they were regularly one of the league’s best teams. They made the playoffs 14 seasons in a row between 1975 and 1988.

The Islanders are best known for their dynasty in the early 1980s. In 1980, the Islanders reached the Stanley Cup Final for the first time. Their roster featured a stacked lineup of hall of famers like Mike Bossy, Bryan Trottier, and Denis Potvin, Clark Gillies, and Billy Smith. In the Stanley Cup Final, the Islanders played against the Philadelphia Flyers. The Islanders won the first game of the series after Denis Potvin’s overtime goal and won all three of their home games. Bobby Nystrom’s overtime goal in Game 6 clinched the series for the Islanders.

The dynasty the Islanders started in 1980 lasted for four seasons. The team won the Stanley Cup four times in a row between 1980 and 1983. In 1983, the Islanders defeated Wayne Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup Final. The Islanders were the older and more experienced team; they swept the series and prevented Gretzky from scoring even a single goal.

In 1984, the Islanders reached the Stanley Cup Final for the fifth consecutive year. The series was a rematch with the Oilers, and Edmonton came out on top this time—ending the Islanders’ dynasty after a five game series.

From 1994 to 2015, the Islanders failed to advance beyond the first round of the playoffs. This was the longest an NHL team had gone without winning a playoff series. The team finally broke this streak in 2016, when they defeated the Florida Panthers in the first round. Islanders captain John Tavares scored the series-winning goal in double overtime.
