Rock musical Next to Normal tells the story of a struggling suburban mother with bi-polar disorder and her family who is affected by her illness. With book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt, the play, which is directed by MIchael Grief, examines various issues such as suicide, drug abuse, modern psychiatry and the conflicts of suburban life. The musical, which opened on Broadway in 2009, won various awards including three Tony Awards for Best Original Score, Best Orchestration and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Alice Ripley.
