North Carolina State Wolfpack Basketball Details

“Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up.” – Jim Valvano

The late Jimmy V became a legend at NC State after leading the Wolfpack to the 1983 NCAA championship. It was unexpected and exhilarating, but far from the only accomplishment in North Carolina State’s hoops history.

NC State won its first national title in 1974 behind three-time All-American and national player of the year David Thompson. The team has reached nearly a dozen Sweet Sixteens, and been to the NCAA Tournament more than two dozen times.

But let’s go back further. When they were known as North Carolina A&M, the “Farmers” played their first intercollegiate game against Wake Forest in 1911. The school was a charter member of the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1953, joining with Duke, North Carolina and Wake Forest.

The four schools are located in an area known as “Tobacco Road” in college hoops lore. NC State, North Carolina and Duke are all within 25 miles of each other, and Wake was in the same proximity before moving to Winston-Salem in the 1950s. Each of these four ACC rivals has won at least two national titles.

The Wolfpack play home games in PNC Arena, which is also the home of the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes. While the arena isn’t on campus, it’s just a few miles away.

During home games, you’ll see NC State’s mascots, known as Mr. and Mrs. Wuf. They were married in 1981 by the Wake Forest Demon Deacon during halftime of a basketball game. The live mascot is a Tamaskan dog named Tuffy, who looks like a husky and can be seen at Wolfpack events.
