Ohio State Buckeyes Basketball Details

Long-time head coach Thad Matta is out, as the Ohio State Buckeyes abruptly parted ways after a rough 17-15 record and an 8th place finish in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes missed out on the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season and that was enough for the university to want to make a change on the bench. In comes former Butler head coach Chris Holtmann, who accepted the Buckeyes job after a very respectable 2016-17 season with the Bulldogs, where he coached the team to a 25-9 record and a trip to the NCAA Tournament’s South Regional Semifinal. Holtmann brings the ability to recruit as well as get positive production out of his entire bench. For the 2017-18 season, he’ll be working with an understaffed Ohio State team. Center Trevor Thompson, who averaged 11 points and nine rebounds last season, left the team to go play pro ball. Guard JaQuan Lyle quit the team back in April after a great sophomore year where he averaged 11.4 points per game. Holtmann also granted the release of freshman guard Braxton Beverly and dismissed freshman Derek Funderbuck.

For the 2017-18 season, the Buckeyes are working with just eight scholarship players, including forward Jae’Sean Tate, who may be seeing time in a ball-handling role. Last season, Tate averaged 14.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Junior guard C.J. Jackson is the only other player who had a major role with the ball in his hands last season, and he’ll surely be called upon to help run the floor. The Columbus faithful will surely pack Value City Arena this season, but the fans may be hard-pressed to see a lot of wins from such a thin Ohio State squad.
