Red Hot Chili Peppers Details
The year was 1989, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers were in a dark place. Several band members had come and gone (including founding member Jack Irons), lead singer Anthony Kiedis was struggling with drug addiction and, most tragically, the group had recently lost guitarist Hillel Slovak to a heroin overdose. The band’s first three albums hadn’t made much of a dent on the charts, either. But then, a breakthrough: Thanks largely to exposure on MTV, 1989’s Mother's Milk went certified gold by early 1990. Rejuvenated by the success, the band brought in legendary producer Rick Rubin to help work on their next project. The result, 1991’s Blood Sugar Sex Magik, remains the seminal Chili Peppers album to this day. Singles “Suck My Kiss,” “Give It Away” and “Under the Bridge” were all smash hits, with the latter serving as Kiedis’ harrowing rumination on his drug addiction. The album has sold 7 million copies in the U.S. to date.
Since Blood Sugar Sex Magik, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have released six albums, with a span of four or five years typically separating each record. 1999’s Californication is their best-selling record worldwide with 16 million copies sold, with single “Scar Tissue” charting in the top 10. 2006’s Stadium Arcadium not only dominated the airwaves, but also became essential iPod listening as a seminal album of the early digital music era. Their most recent record, The Getaway, was released in June 2016. The band’s current lineup includes Kiedis, bassist Flea, drummer Chad Smith and guitarist Josh Klinghoffer.
