San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks
An NFC West rivalry four decades in the making, the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers have both been at the top of the NFL totem pole throughout the history of their rivalry. Their first meeting took place in 1976, with the teams playing 38 times in total. Both teams have taken trips to the Super Bowl in the 2010s, with both teams standing in the way of the other given their constant competition in the NFC West.
Key players throughout this rivalry have been from recent years in the rivalry, when both teams were at their best and directly competing with one another for conference titles. For the Seahawks that means defensive stars like Richard Sherman and Kam Chancellor, while the 49ers were anchored by star defenders like Patrick Willis and offensive standouts such as wide receiver Michael Crabtree.
Historic Seahawks vs. 49ers Games
The most iconic game between the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks was also the only playoff meeting between the two teams. That matchup came in the 2014 NFC Championship Game, which the Seahawks won in dramatic fashion to get to the Super Bowl. San Francisco led for the majority of the game, getting off to a fast start when they forced a fumble in Seattle territory to set up a field goal. They led 17-10 in the third quarter, before the Seahawks stormed back to score the final 13 points of the game.
On the game's final drive, the 49ers had a chance to win the game with a touchdown deep in Seattle territory. A final pass to the end zone was deflected by Richard Sherman, and ended up in the arms of Malcolm Smith, whose interception sealed the conference championship for the Seahawks, after which Sherman's legendary postgame interview grabbed the headlines. Seattle went on to win the Super Bowl against the Denver Broncos, as their defense put the clamps on all-time great Peyton Manning.
2011 was considered to be the beginning of the apex of the rivalry between the Seahawks and 49ers, when Pete Carroll was hired to coach the Seahawks and Jim Harbaugh was hired to coach the Niners, both of whom came from Pac-12 programs to lead west coast NFL squads to great success.

When Do the Seahawks Play the 49ers?
Every NFL season sees the Seahawks and 49ers square off twice, as the schedule pits them against each other in two regular season matchups per year as a result of them both being in the NFC West. As was the case in 2014, there is the potential for them to square off a third time in the playoffs, but that has only happened one time in the history of their rivalry. The Seahawks host games at CenturyLink Field, while Levi's Stadium is the home of the Niners.
