About the Violent Femmes
They call themselves the Violent Femmes, but this band could just as easily be named On Again, Off Again. That's because the trio, initially active from 1980 to 1987, has declared itself active and inactive multiple times over the last few decades.
The current incarnation of the Violent Femmes includes singer/songwriter and guitarist Gordan Gano, bassist Brian Ritchie and drummer Brian Viglione. Their moniker stems from adopting the word "femme" from the Milwaukee area's slang for wimps, but the early incarnation of the band certainly made a powerful impression with young listeners. Was it the acerbic, frustrated mood of songs like "Blister In the Sun" and "Kiss Off"? It's hard to say why so-called 'teen outsiders' latched on to the group, but the adolescent devotees ultimately propelled their debut album to platinum success close to a decade after its release.
Violent Femme advanced toward a more mainstream sound with 1986's "The Blind Leading the Naked," but disbanded shortly thereafter. The band resurfaced in 1989 with "3," and steadily produced new studio albums every couple of years over the next decade, ending with 2000's "Freak Magnet." In 2001 they released their first MP3-only album, and in 2002 reissued their debut as a two-disc deluxe edition.
In January 2013, the Violent Femmes announced they would be reuniting (again) and performing at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April. They not only performed there, they also appeared at the Bottlerock Napa Valley in May, Wisconsin's Summerfest in June, and at Chicago's Riot Fest in September. They closed out the year at the 2013/2014 Falls Festival, and recently played the Shaky Knees music festival in Atlanta, Georgia.

Inaugural 'Project Pabst' Festival Announced
Pabst Blue Ribbon--which is apparently being heralded as a "hipster beer" now--is cashing in on its new status and throwing a "hipster festival" called Project Pabst. How PBR went from a cheap beer that tastes less sh*tty than Bud Light to the official drink of tight-pants-wearing urbanites is beyond me, but it might have something to do…Read more
