The modern team pays tribute to the historic Indianapolis Clowns, a Negro Leagues franchise known for pairing high-level baseball with showmanship. The original club began in Miami as the Ethiopian Clowns, later moved to Cincinnati and eventually established its Indianapolis identity.

The Clowns’ baseball history is significant. Future Hall of Famer Hank Aaron played for the organization early in his professional career. Toni Stone played second base for the club in 1953, while Mamie “Peanut” Johnson and Connie Morgan later suited up for the team as well.
