About Furthur
Furthur ends hiatus in September
So you thought the journey of Furthur would not go any further – at least for now. Why? Because after more than four years of almost year-round touring, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh decided to put the band on hiatus through the calendar year.
That's right. After a four night run in Mexico this past January, the band officially declared it was taking the rest of the year off so that Weir and Lesh could focus on solo projects. But fear not, fans. Both men said they remain completely committed to Furthur, recognizing that it has been the longest-tenured, most active band to feature two or more former members of the Grateful Dead.
So what solo projects have the guys been working on? Lesh has been playing nearly every night out on the road, either at his Terrapin Crossroad in California, or as part of Phil Lesh & Friends. Meanwhile, Weir has been hosting the web-based show "Weir Here" every Wednesday night, presented live from TRI Studios in San Rafael. Additionally, he's also been playing a mish-mash of acoustic shows, as well as teaming up to be part of other tours when opportunities arise.
But lo and behold, the band will be back together again. In fact, Furthur is playing several shows in September. The first week of the month they will be part of the Lockn' Festival, joining Weir & Ratdog, Bustle in Your Hedgerow, Cabinet, Del McCoury Band and many more. Then, they will make an appearance at the Marymoor Amphitheater on Tuesday, September 24th that will be broadcast live on Sirius/XM beginning at 9PM EST/6PM PST.
Hiatus? It looks to be officially over.
The summer of Weir (Updated August 30, 2013)
Bay Area icon Bob Weir has had quite the year. Or at least quite the summer. After making headlines for missing a series of shows, his social calendar is suddenly full again. He's sat in with a slew of acts over the past few months, making up for lost time after he was unable to finish Furthur's Capitol Theatre residency in April that led to a rare weeks-long break.
No, Weir hasn't missed any more scheduled time with Furthur. Instead, he's made himself an honorary member of everyone else's band. Take for instance, his performance with the TRI All-Stars back on June 12, or how he sat in with Wilco on "Ripple" two weeks later at a traveling festival in West Palm Beach. Then there were his guest spots with My Morning Jacket (June 27), Grace Potter and the Nocturnals (July 20), and even Warren Haynes and the Garcia Symphonic Celebration (August 1).
Weir's travels have been many, but as a band there's more exciting news on the horizon for Furthur. They've partnered with Cloud 9 Adventures for a four-day music festival called "Paradise Waits," set for the Hard Rock Hotel and Riviera Maya, Mexico January 20-23, 2014.
Furthur has been on a summer/autumn tour that started at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and will end at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on October 6. Stops included the All Good Music Festival in Ohio, the upcoming Interlocken Music Festival, and four dates at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado.
Furthur History
Furthur is the current collaboration of founding Grateful Dead members Phil Lesh and Bob Weir. Furthur was formed in 2009 as a response to the overwhelming success of The Dead’s 2009 tour. The name Furthur, is a nod to Ken Kesey and the Merry Prankster’s 1939 International Harvester school bus, which was named Further. The band is stacked with an all-star lineup of musicians including Jeff Chimenti (RatDog), John Kadlecik (Dark Star Orchestra), Joe Russo (Benevento/Russo Duo), and backup singers Sunshine Becker, and Jeff Pehrson.
Furthur News- June 2011
Currently, Furthur is on their summer 2011 tour. This tour includes festival stops at All Good Music Festival in West Virginia, and Gathering of The Vibes in Connecticut. Additionally, Furthur will be touring the east coast making stops at historic venues such as Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, and Saratoga Performing Arts Center, before making their way down south. The tour will hit most of the east coast ending up in Florida and Georgia.
Just recently, a fall 2011 tour was announced. Furthur will be hitting the west coast starting with a three-night run in Eugene, Oregon. Furthur will then continue on to Montana, Utah, Colorado, and Las Vegas, before ending their tour in California. Stay tuned for more Furthur news and tour dates.
